Apple Valley, California is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. It was founded in 1887 as an agricultural community and grew to become one of the most important coffee-producing districts in the United States. Today, Apple Valley is a vibrant community with a rich history that has helped make its coffee reputation worldwide. The first coffee beans were grown on location near what is now known as Agoura Hills. The region was heavily populated by Native Americans, and early settlers likely bought their beans from them. By 1860, much of what is now Apple Valley had been developed as farmland around Los Angeles County’s then new City of LA. In 1887, two farmers named John Swayze and Charles Goodrich decided to start selling whole bean coffee from their farmstead at 9th Street and Spring Garden Avenue. At that time, it was the only place in Los Angeles County where you could purchase this type of coffee. Initially, Swayze and Goodrich sold their coffees direct to consumers through newsprint ads or pamphlets distributed throughout the city. However, because they were located so close to downtown LA (just east of Highland Park), word quickly spread about these quality beans and people started wanting to buy them too! In 1889, Swayze & Goodrich opened up a retail store on Autumn Avenue in downtown LA which became known as “The Coffee House”. They continued to sell their beans through this business until 1906 when they transitioned over to processing their own beans into ground coffee under the name “Cameo Coffee Company”. This company operated until 1959 when it merged with another local company which became Starbucks (now part of Amazon). Thus began one of America’s longest running coffee companies – Cameo Coffee Corporation! During its years here in Apple Valley, Cameo produced some incredible cups of espresso! Some memorable products include: The All Day Breakfast Blend – made specifically for children; The Christmas blend; our popular Mocha blend; Our famous Italian Roast; our World Famous Kitten Bean Porter; Our delicious Guatemalan Highlands tea; our all natural Earl Grey Tea…the list goes on! Additionally, we processed many iconic brands such as Maxwell House®, Peet’s®, Dutch Bros., Stilton®and other world-renowned roasters into ground coffee like Peet’s Java™ iced tea which we still offer today! Cook's initial store was the first to be built in the area. In 1896, John Dooley opened the first post office in Apple Valley. The town grew rapidly due to its location close to the railroad and agricultural production. The population of Apple Valley reached 9,000 by 1930 and continued to grow until it peaked at 14,500 in 1960. During this time, many businesses such as Jiffy Lube and KFC were established in the area. However, since then, the population has slowly declined due to a variety of reasons including economic decline and new development around the community.

The population was 11,735 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Apple Valley were Native Americans. The first permanent European settlers arrived around 1849 when George Hargrave settled on a farm near present-day El Monte. A year later, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on an areola of land he had bought from the Mono Indians. In 1851, Lukeblow Ford and his family moved to Apple Valley from Mariposa County, California. In 1875,about 60 families lived in Apple Valley when it was platted as a town by James Irvine and Wm Copley. That year,Apple Valley became home to its first post office which opened in what is now Main Street. In 1896, Josephine Dodge built her home on the corner of Main and Shields Streets. Mrs. Dodge was one of the original residents of Apple Valley and she would continue to reside there until her death in 1951.
