Apple Valley was founded in 1887 by James and Ellen Apple. The first store opened on the corner of East Main Street and Commonwealth Avenue. By 1916, the population had increased to 1,500 people and a school was built on the site of what is now known as Apple Valley Middle School. In 1927, the name changed to Apple Valley High School after the apple orchard that lay near the school’s boundaries. The first football team played at West Side High School before moving to Apple Valley in 1928. Apple Valley won five state championships between 1929 and 1936, while also winning three national championships in 1933, 1934 and 1935. In 1941, World War II began and residents were drafted into military service; however, business continued to grow during this time as soldiers returned home. In 1945, due to increasing enrollment at Apple Valley High School and lack of space at West Side High School, both schools merged into one building which would remain their campus until 2002 when it was sold for development purposes. In 1952-1953 there was a transition from grades 7-12 fromindering through 9th grade (now 8th grade) with an all new school core curriculum that blended arts/science disciplines including math/math Olympiad competition teams as well as cross country running/cycling teams coached by Mrs. Gifford; gifted students received individualized training inSTEAM technology which included computer programming (through California Academy of Science). This innovative program provided instruction for students who could not otherwise attend traditional high school programs across various subject areas such as science/technology engineering art history etc.; many current district staff members were introduced through this program which continues today! During these years there were also several notable athletes who represented our town including State Champion Basketball Coach John Wooden (later LA Lakers coach), “The Axe Man” Bob Neyland (former NFL head coach), Dick Stockton (politician), Don Larsen (athlete) Chuck Daly (basketball coach) & many more! In 1957-1958 an addition was made to the north side of campus with a gymnasium named after Dr. George Brown who served as校長 during this time period along with most notably his assistant basketball coach Abe Pollin who later became dean of UCLA Bruins Men’s Basketball Program! During this same time period another addition was made on the south side with tennis courts & locker rooms added prior to becoming known as “The Performance Center” where many famous singer/actors suchas Barbra Streisand (& Liberace!), Neil Patrick Harris (& Jerry Lewis!), Whitney Houston (& Celine Dion!), Bono (!&#Array;t), U2 (& climbing walls!), Mick Jagger (!&#Array;t)! Finally in 1978 when we became membership based our library system evolved from 2 branches - one adjacent to main Campus Library on East Main Street opposite Spahn’s Market - into over 10 branches throughout our community!
