Apple Valley, California was a small agricultural community located in the southern reaches of San Francisco Bay. The post office at Apple Valley was established in 1887 and served the community until it closed in 1955. The early settlers of Apple Valley were farmers who grew apple trees and raised pigs. The first store in the community was opened by F.W. Hirsch in 1914. By 1925, there were six stores operating in Apple Valley, with a population of 100 people. During World War II, the war-time production of munitions led to an increase in the number of residents working at General Motors plants throughout Northern California and Bay Area cities such as Oakland, San Jose, Berkeley and Emeryville. Many Apple Valley residents also enlisted in the military and served during the war; these men are honored with memorials near their homes like the maintains for WW2 veteran Joe Pappas and John Kroc at Bloomfield Road and Dutch Flat Avenue (now Highway 8). In 1955, when San Francisco Bay Bridge replaced old dirt roads as part of its opening project, much of what is now Apple Valley was moved to make way for Interstate 680 which crossed over from Silicon Valley into Marin County. In recent years much redevelopment has occurred within old industrial areas around nearby Highway 101 between Potrero Hill area and Novato/San Rafael Hills area which benefited from Measure M funding created through Proposition 13 (2006), making this area one of most rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods within San Francisco metropolitan area
