The name "Apple Valley" comes from the initial land grant given to the families that settled there in 1887 by Ulysses S. Grant. The community began as a modest farming hamlet near present-day Apple NFL campus and Mustang Hill Road. A school was built there in 1907 and called Westview School until it merged with nearby Eastview Elementary in 1957 to form Apple Valley High School. In 1969, the community became an incorporated municipality through ballot initiative, becoming one of only two rural communities nationwide to do so (the other being Jamestown, Rhode Island). As a result of its incorporation, Apple Valley has been able to maintain some degree of control over its own affairs since it does not have to answer to county or state government officials like most other municipalities in Fresno County. This autonomy has helped make Apple Valley one of the more vibrant and diverse small towns within Fresno County – with restaurants, shops, churches and businesses galore! In addition to its many cultural attractions such as apple cider production and music festivals throughout the year – including Folk Festival on October 16th & 17th & 27th each year – Apple Valley also boasts some impressive educational institutions such as SJSU's Kiewit School District Campus which houses bothUSD elementary/middle schools (Avery Lane), USD high school (West View) and USD's Pre-Kindergarten program (Mission Hills). Sutter also purchased some of Apple Valley Ranch for $10 per acre. From this purchase, Sutter began building what would become Sacramento's first downtown district. The early settlers in Apple Valley were farmers and their families. However, by 1900, there were over 100 businesses in Apple Valley and its surrounding area. Today, many of these businesses are still in operation and contribute significantly to the community's economy. Some notable businesses include: KFC founder Colonel Sanders' home; Quesnel Brewery; United Airlines terminal at Airport Boulevard; and Adobe Systems Inc.'s headquarters complex on Fair Oaks Drive.). One significant event that took place in Apple Valley during the late 1800s was when General Edwin Ewell captured Sutters Ranch on October 10th 1876 during Battle Of Yuba River which helped spur development within Sacramento County around this time period
Apple Valley was located in the San Gabriel Valley region of southern California. The valley began to form about 12,000 years ago when the earth started to rift and break up. Parts of this area became part of Yuma County and parts became part of Los Angeles County. The first humans lived in what is now Apple Valley around 8,000 years ago.
