Apple Valley, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 9,865 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Kern County and the second most populous community in Fresno County. The name "Apple Valley" is derived from the Mission Dolores Adobe, which stood on what is now called Apple Street in 1885. In recent years, however, some businesses have closed down due to Competition from more centralized locations or because of changing economic conditions elsewhere in the state or nation. The first humans to live in what is now Apple Valley were hunter-gatherers who hunted and gathered plants and fruits near present-day Applecross Road and Mount Whitney Boulevard. They were probably from the Central American Andes or South America.
