GE's decision helped spark a major local industry resurgence in San Bernardino County that continues to this day; today Apple Valley boasts more than 20 businesses employing over 200 people including six hospitals and two universities. Apple Valley is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census.[1] It is adjacent to Mono Lake and is home to the Apple Valley Golf Course and Apple Valley Resort. The first settlers in what is now Apple Valley were French Canadian trappers who came through the area in 1825. They named their new land "Isle aux Meadows" after a meadow near their camp on Isthmus of Juan de Fuca. The next year, they sold the land to James Irvine for $8 per acre. By 1828, both Irvine and his brother William had bought more land from various farmers in the area for $32 per acre. In 1836, Irvine built a cabin at what is now called " applerville."[2] In 1840, Don Carlos Romero founded the San Bernardino Missionary Society in what is now Apple Valley. He arrived with nine other converts from Padre Island Mission on December 6 of that year. On January 9th of that year, he published an announcement of his headquarters at "San Bernardino de los Padres missions".[3] One day later,[4] he wrote: "Our church has been built...We are very much favored with God by His goodness toward us".[5] The mission thrived until 1784 when it was burned down by Indian raiders while under Spanish rule. In 1849, John Sutter discovered gold near Mono Lake while exploring for cattle drives across California's Kings Canyon National Park during the Gold Rush Era. A group of men led by Sutter began mining around Isle aux Meadows where they found five ounces (0.27 grams) of gold each onJanuary 12th 1850.[6][7][8][9][10] The discovery made Isle aux Meadows one of the richest sites in all of California.[11][12][13][14]Sutter soon decided to build a mill on Isle aux Meadows as production became increasingly important due to increased demand from miners throughout California[15], Nevada,[16],[17],[18]:252 However, construction did not begin until after Sutter's death due to financial difficulties caused by overproduction and competition from other mines across America[19]. Soon after its founding,[20],the mill became one of the most important businesses in Apple Valley.[21]:253-255 After years of hard work and investment,[22]:256-258 it reached its peak production capacity with 10 million pounds (4 thousand kilograms) worth processed product being produced each week in 1860[24]:282 At its height, it employed up to 100 people (out Of which 60% were women)[25]:288 By 1870 there were only fourteen workers remaining at the mill due to expanding production into other industries such as distilling spirits and cider making; however it continued producing products until 1907 when it closed down because of World War I saving money along with many other mills across America due to prohibitionism during that time.[26]:291 Today remnants can be seen today inside former mill building including an old machine shop still used for manufacturing parts today known as “The Shop”
