The Arcadia, California Air Force deployment gift history can be traced back to the early 1940s when the Department of Defense created the United States Air Forces in order to provide a national air defense. The USAF was activated on Dec. 12, 1941 and initially consisted of only a Chapter 1 squadron with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. In 1942, the USAF became operational with Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes and then Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers in 1943. TheAAF also received its first jet aircraft – the North American F-4 Phantom – in 1945. From 1942 until 1949,ARCADIA AFB operated Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters which were replaced by McDonnell Douglas F-101 Voodoo Hustlers beginning in 1951. These jets were used for both aerial combat against Nazi Germany during World War II and training purposes until they were retired from service in 1973. From 1948 until 1957, ARCADIA AFB operated Convair C-130 Hercules tactical Airlift airplanes which provided airlift for both military and civilian purposes including firefighting, search and rescue missions, medical evacuations, disaster relief operations and other events throughout California’s Central Valley region. In 1994,ARCADIA AFB opened its doors to the public as part of Operation Desert Storm which sawOperation Allied Shield involving over 100 countries across six continents deploying an unprecedented number of military personnel and equipment to support coalition forces during Operation Desert Storm. As part of this operation CAF also donated surplus CF-18 Hornet fighter jets from its current inventory to support allied fighter pilots flying over Iraq during the Gulf War in 1990/1991. Since then,the Air Force has again deployed Gift History at Arcadia AFB through activation/deactivation/transition command assignments such as Multinational Readiness Command (MRC) - currently stationed at Ramstein AB - Headquarters US European Command - Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) - Commander US Pacific Fleet - Commander US Marine Corps Forces East & WestPac - Commander USAF Pacific Region (USAFRPAC) - Aerospace Maintenance Squadron 521st Aircraft Maintenance Unit).
