The museum was founded in 1979 by president Jimmy Carter with the goal of providing "a home for America's aerospace heritage." Arcadia, California is a small town located in northern California. The population was 7,956 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Modesto to the east, East Palo Alto to the west and North San Francisco to the north. Arcadia was founded in 1871 as an agricultural community on a rise above the confluence of the San Joaquin and Stanislaus rivers. The name may be derived from Ancient Greece's Arcadia, meaning "the Isolated Mountain". Today, Arcadia remains a primarily agricultural town with few residents other than farmers and their families. The first Europeans to visit Arcadia were Spanish missionaries in 1821 who named it Fornax after General José de Montoya y Osorio's invasion of southern California. In 1872, United States Congressman Augustus Porter donated land for what is now known as Arcadia Elementary School which would serve as a public school for students from surrounding villages until 1923 when it became part ofUSD High School District #2. There are no schools within Arcadian boundaries today but there are many churches that offer educational opportunities to their parishioners in neighboring towns such as Hercules and Livermore. The first post office in Arcadia was established on December 12th, 1871 with Wm Lakin as its first mail carrier. A new post office building was erected on May 25th, 1907 which served until 1951 when it burned down due to arson by local teenagers. The current post office building was completed on November 2nd, 1949 and served until 1977 when it also burned down due to arson by local teenagers.. Arcadia, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 2,592 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The first permanent residents of Arcadia were Spanish Franciscans who arrived in 1769 and built the Mission San Francisco de Asís on the present-day site of Arcadia. The mission was abandoned by 1824, but a group of Californios rebuilt it and named it after their patron saint, San Francisco. Rancho Santiago de Atascadero was granted to José Joaquín Cámpora in 1847 and became known as La Habra After he sold it to George Hearn in 1865 for $10,000. In 1868, John Sutter founded the City of Fresno on land he acquired from Cámpora with an intention to create a new central center for all southern California. The city grew rapidly and by 1899 had outgrown its original boundaries. In 1912, voters approved an act creating Arcadia Township within Fresno County and incorporation followed two years later In 1915, when World War I began (), Arcadia joined other agricultural communities in support of the war effort through a program called "We are Here" which offered goods such as gasoline and munitions free to those who contributed items like fruits or vegetables to local WAR bonds auctioned off throughout California
Arcadia was founded in 1873 by Capt. George A. Smith and his wife, Julia P. Smith. The first post office at Arcadia was established in 1875. In 1916, the town became a city and is still governed by a mayor-council form of government with a Mayor and seven Council Members.
