Arcadia, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 3,869 at the 2010 census. It is located about 45 miles (72 km) east of San Francisco and 26 miles (41 km) north of Sacramento. The town began as an agricultural community in 1887 on 7 acres (2 ha) near the present-day intersection of U.S. Route 101 and State Route 95. By 1912, Arcadia had a post office, five churches, a schoolhouse, and sixty-five homes. In 1928, the town incorporated as a city under the name of Roseville after its Mayor Aileen MeehanRoseville was platted in 1909 by Wm J Callahan Sr., who also founded nearby Oroville. The growth of Arcadia slowed during World War II because there was no military duty available to attract new residents; however, when war resumed in 1946, Arcadia increased its population by 50%. The postwar years were another time for growth as farmers took advantage of new technology that arrived with postwar affluence: irrigation systems made agriculture possible on acreage that once had been unproductive pastureland or chaparral; subdivisions were built to house workers on farms around schools and other services; and downtown became a vibrant center for nightlife and shopping while still accommodating farming activities. However, rapid suburbanization during the late 1960s and early 1970s caused many people to move out into Arcadia's villages which developed along Interstate 5 outside of town limits-a trend that continued until recently when most residents now live within either Arcadian Village or rural areas annexed byArcadian Village

Fremont as a mission of the Franciscan order under the name of San José de Arcádia. The town grew quickly because of its natural resources: gold and silver were discovered in the area, and farmers turned to agriculture to support the growth. In 1851, Arcadia became a city with its own government and first library. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to new transportation technologies such as railways and automobiles. In 1924, Arcadia incorporated as a town under state law for towns that have reached 100,000 residents within five years of incorporation. In 1948,Arcadia became an unincorporated community when it was designated as part of Alameda County. The last mayor of Arcadia was Arturo Guerra who served from 1969 until his death in 1984.

In 1893, Arcadia voters passed a measure authorizing the construction of a waterworks to supplyArcadia with potable water from underground sources. In 1897, Arcadia erected its first monument - an obelisk at First Street and Alma Avenue - dedicated to military veterans who had served in World War I or World War II. In 1925, the town voted to annex adjacent unincorporated areas which then had a population of over 200 people. This annexation caused some conflict because many residents felt that they were being annexed without their consent while others argued that it constituted proper governmental function because it increased the number of residents within arcadian borders
