It is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Bakersfield and about 30 miles (48 km) north of Los Angeles. The first people to live in Arcadia were the Hahns and their children who arrived from Oregon in 1879. They built a cabin on the edge of what is now known as the " Arcadia Heights" neighborhood. In 1905, they purchased land south of present-day Arcadia and started building a large home which they called "The White House". In 1909, Sam Rayburn becameGovernor of California and he appointed John Fenton as Mayor of Arcadia to help with its development. In 1912, when Sam Rayburn was impeached and removed from office, Mayor Fenton became City Manager instead and continued to build The White House until it burned down in 1951. In 1923, Jock Mahoney founded American Motors Corporation which manufactured cars here for export to Europe under the name "Delta". Delta closed its doors in 1984 after announcing plans to move production out of America altogether citing over- regulation by the US government due to rising fuel prices caused by oil embargo hysteria. On July 4th 1906 two brothers named George Washington Smith opened a grocery store on Main Street east of current day Arcadia High School that would become one of Northern California's most successful retail enterprises during its early years with local sales totaling $1 million annually according to 1949 Records Of Northern California History Volume XII pgs 330 - 331
