The first Europeans to visit Arcadia were Spanish Franciscan missionaries in 1769-1770 who named it La Encantada for an almond orchard on the site. The name may have originated from "arca" meaning "watercourse" and "dia" meaning "place". Arcadia was first settled by Native Americans before European discovery in 1680. A mission was established there in 1836 and cattle ranchers began to arrive in droves during the 1850s, driving out all other settlers. By 1875, Arcadia had a post office, store, school and Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1906, Arcadian entrepreneur Clarence Goodyear organized what would become his biggest business venture ever: the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.. Goodyear introduced rubber products to America after seeing them used on farm fields in Europe. The company became one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world before going public in 1917 and becoming known as ExxonMobil. In 1951, Goodyear merged with other companies to create what would be called North American Aviation Company (NACA).
