Arcadia, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 37,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western edge of San Bernardino County and administratively surrounds Riverside. The history of Arcadia can traced back to 1877 when entrepreneurs J.P. Morgan and Wm. Henson bought 1,500 acres (500 ha) of what is now Arcadia from the Mexican government for $1 million dollars in what was then known as Rancho Cucamonga. The town's name originated with a grant from Commodore John Dicken Jr., who named it after his patron saint—arcadiana or "the radiant one." The first post office in Arcadia opened on November 7, 1878. The name change occurred due to the discovery of oil in nearby Claremont during that year's Pan American Exposition; this led to an increase in business for the mercantile firm of Folsom & McDermott which renamed itself Eureka Mines Corporation and new offices were built at 625 S State Street in 1915-16 while also opening a millinery store on Elmira Avenue near today's downtown core. In 1916-17 another office building was completed at 9th and Market Streets; it functioned as both a hotel and law firm until its closure by 1949 because of economic difficulties following World War II - an event that coincided with progressivism taking hold across most parts of America due to war shortages Standard Oil had managed to achieve during the previous two decades despite being based deep within coastal New York City). A post office reopened at 6th and Euclid Streets on October 15, 1948; this merged into the current Arcadia Post Office which opened on July 10, 1955.
