The Arcata Air Force Base was founded in 1941 and has played a significant role in the community ever since. It is home to the California Air National Guard's 127th Fighter Wing, which flies the F-15E/F Eagle, one of the most recent variants of the fighter jet. The wing also conducts air shows, competes in air races, and participates in various other activities at AFB. One of AFB's prominent structures is its History Museum which opened its doors on June 1, 2009. The museum is dedicated to telling the story of airforce gift history in Arcata. Its collection spans more than 50 years and includes items from both military and civilian organizations. In 1964, then-Lt. Col USAF (Ret.) Hoyt Sarpy donated his converted Boeing 727 airliner to AFB as an aircraft storage hangar for fighter jets and bombers. It served as an important facility for storing planes until it was remodeled into a museum on October 16th, 2006. Now known as "Hoyt Sarpy Museum Annex," it features displays about aircraft donation history, Air National Guardsmen who have served at AFB, and AFM culture during that time period. In addition to exhibits about Hoyt Sarpy Airport and Arcata Municipal Airport from his days as a bomber pilot until his death in 2000, the annex also contains artifacts from two different World War II internment camps located within close distance of both airports - OAK AAF & POW LAB Site #1 & POW LAB Site #2

The Arcata Air Force Base gift history began in 1947 when the United States Air Force established its first unit at the then-new airbase. The current wing at Arcata AFB, The 9th Bomb Wing, was activated on 1st December 1948 and is one of only a few wings in the USAF that was not created as a result of the Wright brothers' Flight; instead it was formed as part of Continental Airlines' program to transfer surplus bombers from other airlines. The wing became operational with Boeing 707-based aircraft on 15th October 1949 and has been flying Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol and intelligence gathering aircraft ever since. In 1990, the Wing's Boeing 747-800H "Lark" flew its first overseas mission while based at Incirlik Airport in Turkey as part of Operation Desert Storm. Withdrawn from active duty service on 30th March 2013, the 9 BW will be transitioning to their new Airbus A330neo family planes starting from 19th September 2017.
Arcata, California is a small town located in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Harmon Area. The first European to visit Arcata was Jedediah Smith in 1821. He named the location "Eagle Point" after his eagle hunting ground in Oregon. The only resident of Arcata at that time was Mr. and Mrs. John Leary who ran a general store on Commercial Street and also raised chickens on their property which later became the Leary Agricultural Research Station (LARS). In 1875, a group of men from Fresno under the leadership of Capt. George Atherton established what would become known as The American Legion Post #5 here in Arcata; they were inspired by General Ulysses S. Grant's speechifying address at Monterey Bay High School where he announced that Californians were not going to give up their rights and must fight for them if necessary! In 1915, during World War I, The American Legion Post #5 furnished food for 6 Infantry companies stationed at Fort Beale near Stockton when no other supplies could be found available locally or from nearby agencies due to prohibitionist laws passed by Governor Hiram Johnson! In 1935, Drs.: Chas Drollinger and Willis Hodge set up an operating hospital for mental patients here in Arcata with 12 beds which would still be operative today (the first such facility in California) . After Gen: Franklin D Roosevelt's declaration of war against Japan on December 7th 1941 our post served as Headquarters & Medical Department for all military units garrisoned or quartered within 1/2 mile radius including civilians living adjacent to lot where post now stands! On January 15th 1945 we lost all hope when Japanese bombed our building killing most personnel inside including Commanding Officer & First Lieutenant Robert Crouse along with 5 nurses plus 2 doctors one being Dr Chas Drollinger himself! After many months of hard fighting we finally secured unconditional surrender giving us back ourfreedom!

Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9065 which establishedfour combat groups within the USAF: Strategic Air Command (SAC), Tactical Air Command (TAC), European Theater of Operations (ETO), and Pacific Ocean Areas Commands (POCs). These commands were responsible for carrying out specific goals set by Roosevelt including harassing enemy bomber fleets while providing support for landing operations during amphibious assaults or campaigns against Japan or China. SAC was activated on November 17th 1943 under General George C Marshall with headquarters at Omaha Beach located adjacent to Normandy beachhead where American forces landed on July 8th 1944 to liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny One significant contribution made by SAC during World War II was their early development of electronic warfare which would play a major role in subsequent conflicts including Korea and Vietnam

Arcata, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It was founded on January 3rd, 1853 by George and Lucy Howe, who named it for their sister Arcadia in Athens, Greece. The Howes arrived from Connecticut and platted the town on land that they had purchased from Juan Bautista de Anza. The towns first post office opened in 1857. Arcata grew rapidly due to its location near the annual fruit crops and cattle drives that brought people and goods to the area during the early 1800s. In 1905, Arcata became an incorporated city under state law. By 1915, it had a population of over 500 people. Today, Arcata is a thriving community with a rich history that has been prominently featured in local media and histories books.
The first European to visit Arcata was a Spanish captain named Francisco de Anza in 1819. He and his men explored the area and charted many of its features on their maps. The town began to grow rapidly due to the new trade routes connecting California with Asia and Europe. In 1838, Arcata was incorporated as a city under the name of San Francisco de Asís. In 1865, American forces invaded Mexico during the Mexican-American War, which led to an influx of Americans into the area. This increased demand for goods and services brought about by war created new opportunities for businesses such as meat packinghouses, flour mills, lumberyards, mining operations and more. The city quickly became known as one of the most thriving in California. During World War II,Arcata played a vital role in providing food for Allied troops stationed in North Africa and Europe. The city's proximity to military supply convoys made it an ideal location for manufacturing munitions and other supplies. The war also contributed to some major changes within Arcata: In 1945, Mayor Harry Wigmore replaced incumbent Jesse Hobbs with Oscar Ziegler as mayoralty candidate; Ziegler would later become president of Stanford University. Arcata experienced significant growth after World War II; by 1970 it had reached its current size with over 20,000 residents living in areas surrounding downtown excepting sectors along Interstate 5 (the "arcadian" core) which are zoned residential rather than commercial or industrial). One result has been that there is now general consensus among planners that downtown should be gradually vacated so that land can be developed around a larger public plaza near I-5 instead (see Downtown redevelopment plan). A number of high-profile projects have been spearheaded or completed Downtown since then including: Taylor Swift’s “ arcadian house” – completed in early 2018 on property adjacent to State Street between Polk & Webster Streets; Google’s $1 billion headquarters project - started construction late last year on part of what once was City Hall Plaza adjacent to First Street; Andres Salinas’ $225 million development project - set for completion this year at 4th & Townsend Streets just north of City Hall Plaza
