The Arcata Coast Guard Auxiliary was organized on November 15, 1921. It became a full-time, permanent part of the Cal State Hayward campus on September 30, 1923. The Coast Guard Auxiliary has been providing security and support to the community in Arcata since its inception. In 1922, the auxiliary purchased a small shop at 915 First Street which served as their headquarters until 1946 when they moved to the current location at 999 First Street. On February 5, 1924, the auxiliary bought an engine from Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department for use on their patrol boat “Pinecone”. This was their first vessel and it served until 1935 when they acquired their second vessel “Nimbus”. They also operated a tugboat from 1938-1946. In 1949 they acquired their third vessel “Albatross” which served until 1955 when they replaced her with a larger motorboat called “Eagle” which served until 1966 when she was sold tothe Hearst Corporation for use as pleasure craft in Marin County. Their fourth boat named “Osprey” arrived in 1969 and continued service through 1984 before being retired due to corrosion issues and sold back to the Coast Guard Auxiliary who restored her into operating condition in 1988/1989. The current Arcata Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel is named after Representative Donahue (Dennis J.) - HMCS Osprey . In 1952, Congressman Donahue sponsored HJRes 246 which amended Title 36 of the United States Code making it illegal for any person other than members of either house of Congress or state legislators or officers duly accredited by that house to possess or use firearms while performing official duties as members of any branch or department of government including coast guard personnel including those serving on vessels owned by CSSW donahue aboard his ship HMCS Osprey during Surf City Naval Base operations off southern California coast April 14-20 years ago

Arcata, California is a small town in northern California. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of San Francisco Bay and east of Sacramento. The first people to live in Arcata were Ohlone Indians who inhabited what is now downtown Arcata. A rancho was granted to Juan Rodríguez by Governor José Joaquín de Herrera in 1842. In 1851, the United States bought the Rancho Santa Clara from JuanRodríguez and it became part of Rancho Antelope. In 1865, when Californio General Antonio López de Santa Anna came to California with his army and took possession of most of what is now Arcata County, he ordered Captain Edward Waddell to build a military post here called Fort Point on the eastern edge of town. The fort served as an artillery battery during Mexican-American War episodes such as Battle of Bear Valley (1866) and Battle of Stockton (1868). Arcata residents voted in favor of incorporation in 1907 and became citizens of the new county under state law that year. The first post office opened in 1909. By 1920, there were 10 businesses in town including two grocery stores, four banks and six churches; three doctor's offices; one printing press; one grocery store chain; two engineering firms; two machine shops; two bars; one movie theater; five restaurants; four bowling alleys and one hotel/motel complex called "The Lodge". A fire destroyed much of downtown Arcata on November 12, 1965 after being set by arsonists looking for insurance money related to a previous building fire which had been ruled accidental by local officials Some rebuilt while others vacated their homes as they faced eviction from their properties owned by local landowners who refused to provide fire insurance or affordable housing for displaced tenantsDeveloper Don Burnett purchased many buildings then rehabilitated them into single family dwellings known today as Burnett Homes
