Arcata is a small town located in Northern California. The population was 5,287 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the north side of the San Joaquin River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Fresno and 30 miles (48 km) south of Sacramento. The first Europeans to visit Arcata were Mexican traders in 1821, who named it Rancho de las Pulgas. A post office was established in 1826, and by 1850 there were 9 residents. The town was platted in 1854, when John C. Fremont came through from Nevada with his wagon train and found land for homesteads hereabouts. The first store opened in 1861; the last closed in 1984. The cotton gin was built about 1870 and still operates today as a private business. In 1886Arcata became one of 36 townships within Yosemite National Park boundary; it has since been annexed by Yosemite Valley proper twice - once in 1906 and again in 1978-79 following enactment of legislation creating Yosemite National Park from portions of Tulare County and Stanislaus County.. In 1911 three men - Gifford Pinchot, head ranger at Sequoia National Park; Harry Houdini; George Eastman - organized a group to map out an area for development around Arcata which would include new housing developments, vineyards, parks and other public works projects that would help make Arcata a city by the early 1920s.. Arcata, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the nearby San Joaquin River and its tributaries. It was founded in 1853 by John Herschel Arcata and James W. Hill as a small farming community on the right bank of the river near what is now Redwood City. The first post office opened in 1854, and Arcata became a city in 1907. The city Limits were extended to include the newly incorporated towns of Milpitas and Pleasanton in 1912, making Arcata an urban area with a total population of over 30,000 people as of 2010. The downtown core lies along Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard between First Street (northwest) and Alameda Street (southwest). Other major streets include Broadway (east), Porter Avenue (northeast), University Avenue (southwest), Stevens Creek Boulevard (south), Duncan Drive (southeast), and I-880/I-680 east to west within city limits; these routes are also served by light rail service operated by BART Corporation.[2] Downtown areas have been redevelopment over time including plans for a new high school campus adjacent to UCSF which has not yet happened;[3] several shopping malls which have had success such as Macy's(2005–2010)[4] or Sears(2011–present).[5][6][7][8][9] In addition there are numerous housing developments throughouttown especially near downtown such as Hacienda Hills,[10] Arroyo Grande,[11], Northgate Village[12], Southgate Village[13], etc., providing much needed employment opportunities for residents during difficult times.
Arcata is a small city in Humboldt County, California, United States. The population was 9,670 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern side of the Humboldt River between Redding and Eureka. The first European to visit Arcata was José Francisco de San Martín on July 20, 1797. Diego Rivera also visited Arcata in 1909-10 while working as an art director for the Pacific Railroad Company. In 1876, John Sutter founded the Central Pacific Railroad at what is now Arcata along with his brother Charles and their father Ferdinand Sutter. The company built a mill here in 1877 and erected a toll bridge over the Humboldt River across from present day State Route 362 (now Interstate 5) in 1879 which charged $1 per car for passage across. In 1881, Sutter sold his interest in Central Pacific to Benjamin Moore & Co., who continued to operate it until 1991 when it was purchased by Empire ExpressRailway Inc.. A post office called Arcata was established at this location on December 11, 1876, and remained open until it closed on September 23, 1906. The first store in town opened on November 16th 1870 by Wm Ransom & Bros., a grocery store that used horse power to turn around barrels of flour coming downriver from Sacramento Valley into town for storage Arcata had its own newspaper "The Argus" which began publication October 2nd 1870 issue
