Arcata, California is a small town located in Sonoma County, California. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is adjacent to Petaluma. The first European to see Arcata was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542 during his voyage from Mexico City to Catalina Island. In 1821 the community name was changed to Redwood City after General John Sutter's purchase of Rancho Redwood at what is now downtown Arcata. The first post office in Arcata opened on December 3, 1825 and was known as Woolcott until it became known as Arcata on February 25, 1826. The first store in Arcata was called the Post Office Exchange and operated from a building located near Broadway and Porter Streets until it burned down in 1857. In 1861 when the United States Civil War began, the Battle of Benicia occurred here with Union forces under Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer attacking Confederate forces under Major General Robert Ewell Johnson. A detachment of Ulysses S Grant's army led by Judge Advocate General David Dudley Field attacked this force about 2 miles east of town along mounted roads leading into Benicia Pass In 1865 when California became an independent republic there were three towns within its boundaries - Redwood City (later renamedArcata), Woolcott and Benicia Heights - but only Benicia Heights survived into Mexican rule because it had been annexed by Alameda County while Woolcott fell victim to Native American raids that continued even after annexation. A new post office called Colfax opened on July 15th 1870 and remained open until May 4th 1902 when it merged with Woolcott post office which then closed for good on July 1st 1903 due to lack of mail service from Arcata through Colfax Canyon .
