The Arcata Museum of Marine Science and History has a rich history dating back to 1892. The museum is the oldest museum in California and one of the first in the United States dedicated to maritime history. It was founded as the San Francisco Maritime Museum by a group of businessmen and educators who were determined to preserve Californian maritime history. In 1865, Captain Charles Sutter established his whaling station on Monterey Peninsula. By 1875, he had built a small shipyard on Point Conception, which became known as the Sutter Shipyards. In 1886, Captain James Worthy replaced Sutter at Monterey Peninsula and started building ships for both American and British fleets. He is considered one of the pioneers of marine engineering.
