Arcata, California is a small town in the Santa Clara County of California, United States. It is located on the north shore of San Francisco Bay and has a population of just over 1,700 people. The town was founded in 1856 by mid-19th century miners who came to the area looking for new land to mine. The first post office was established in Arcata on November 3, 1856. The name "Arcata" probably derives from the Asoak Indian word arkhat meaning 'vault'. By 1863, when it became part of the Union Territory of California, Arcata had two stores and 10 residents. In 1866, James Hultgren built a sawmill at what is now Civic Center Drive and began operations as Hultgren's Mill & Saw Company. He also started to build a store and house on Main Street which he named Arcata Landing after his sister's home in Milpitas, California. In 1870, he sold his mill to JF Lyon who continued operation as Lyon's Mill until 1916 when it merged with Donnelley & Sons Lumber Company to form Donnelley-Lyon lumber company which still operates today. In 1912 there were only eight people living in Arcata according to census records; however by 1920 there were sixty-five residents and fourteen businesses including three banks (the First National Bank (founded 1865), Kaiser National Bank (1896), Pacific Coast Trust Co.)). In 1924Arcata was incorporated as an unincorporated community with a population of fifty-six people living in twelve homes. By 1930 there were ninety-one residents and twenty businesses operating out of seventeen storefronts downtown including one radio station KQED/NBC). During World War II Arcata served as both an air base for USAAF pilots flying missions over Northern China The typical working day for someone employed in any business during prohibition was ten hours long starting at 5am sharp; however many workers worked extra hours because they had nothing else to do apart from buying goods available only during prohibition period such as rum or beer that could not be bought openly without running afoul of regulation prohibiting sales to speakeasy customers or anyone under eighteen years old. 15% excise tax applied directly to these products while 30% went into government coffers supporting social programs like food stamps and welfare assistance
