This land had been owned by Juan Bautista López del Castillo since 1776; however, because López del Castillo did not do anything to improve it until after his death in 1847, he is considered the founder of Rancho Santa Clara County. From here on out, ranchos were given acreage by their owners rather than be granted by royal decree or trusteeship like other types of land tracts within Mexico.(Hernandez 1997) One such owner who made significant contributions to early Arcatamilitary culture was Manuel Antonio Carrillo y Borrego Sr., better known as Baron Carrillo or Don José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla(1822-1910).
