In 1932, the Arcata National Guard was organized as a separate unit of the California National Guards. In 1948, it became an all-volunteer force and in 1969, it became an Army Reserve unit. The unit has served in various capacities throughout its history, including deployments to World War II and Viet Nam. The Arcata National Guard is one of more than 100 national guard units that make up the United States Armed Forces Reserve Command. The command is headquartered at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. It consists of over 50 military installations across the United States and operates under Defense Department supervision. TheArcataNationalGuard was formed on December 12, 1932 from parts of the old Sacramento Valley Regiment and Alameda County Battalion (later called the Alameda County Regulars) militia groups which had been mobilized for service in World War I. The new organization received its first orders of business from then-Governor Hiram Johnson on March 2, 1933 by proclamation designating April 14th as "National Guard Day." At its creation, the ARCATANATIONAL GUARD consisted of 3 battalions--the 1st Battalion (Alameda County), 2nd Battalion (Sacramento Valley), and 3rd Battalion (Fremont)--and a Headquarters Company with two sections: Alpha Company commanded by Captains John Laddington and Lester Garretson, Bravo Company commanded by Captains Harry Beaumont and Floyd Postell; Training School detachment commanded by Brigadier General James Moseley; Civilian Conservation Corps detachment led by Captain George Wills; Medical Supplies detachment commanded by Captain Henery Sibley; Quartermaster detachment commanded by Captain Augustus Jansen; Aide de camp to Governor Hiram Johnson.; Troops were deployed at various locations around the state but primarily during peacetime exercises at Camp Randall near Sacramento City until 1942 when they were redeployed to Camp Evans located east of Stockton while war began officially on September 16th with their deployment becoming permanent on October 1st when they opened hostilities at Pearl Harbor Hawaii . ARCATANATIONAL GUARD operations ceased following Japan's surrender in 1945 but resumed shortly thereafter with troops being sent to Okinawa where they served through most of 1946 before returning home via Guam after that island surrendered to Japan on September 9th 1945. Upon their return home these soldiers again engaged in peacetime exercises before Deploying once again to Okinawa beginning February 1946 until August 1946 when they withdrew completely due to bad weather conditions there which continued into early 1947 Virgin Islands campaign where members patrolled waters off shore Blowfish Island doing so until relieved approximately March 17th 1949 finally returning home late summer/early fall 1949 After VJN ended combat operations local troops returned home celebrated Veterans parade held November 10th traveling down Market street ending up outside City Hall Mayors office ]On Memorial Day weekend 1951 THE ARCATA NATIONAL GANDY COUNCIL met attendance was Mayor Nolan who presented arms certificate signed by Governors Fuller And McComas] On July 8th 1954State Senator Steiner presented swordto Lt Col Donald Armstrong VC commanding 5th Infantry division stationed at Fort Benning GA present day arcatans alumni association

The Arcata area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the early 1800s. The first European to arrive in what is now Arcata was Juan Rodríguez, who arrived on July 1, 1777. He built a small cabin on a bluff overlooking the San Francisco Bay. In 1821, Captain James Cook sighted land to the north and named it Puget Sound after his friend and mentor Lt. John Puget. With this discovery, Englishman George Vancouver became interested in exploring North America and landed at Point Reyes National Seashore on October 10, 1792. He named everything from Vancouver Island to Oregon'sisland after Friends of Britain members he met there including Commodore Johnstone Lewis and Lieutenant David Thompson who had accompanied him on his trip. Arcata began as an agricultural community with several hamlets dotting the landscape near Hastings Creek and Second Street between 1850 and 1865. It wasn't until 1872 when steamboats began landing passengers at Black Rock Cove for trips up San Francisco Bay that Arcata grew into its present-day form as a town of over 50,000 people before experiencing rapid growth during World War II due to military activity along the coast. After victory in World War II, many residents moved out ofArcata into new areas such as Petaluma or Millbrae because of high housing prices; however, mostarcatians returned to their town during the economic boom period that followed 2000-2005 when job opportunities created by new businesses led to more people moving back into town center while other parts ofthe county experienced declines in population
