Arcata, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about 60 miles east of Fresno and 30 miles north of Stockton. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. Timothy J. Hirschsprung, who served as mayor from 2002 to 2006 and then as assistant secretary of state for Economic Development under Governor Gray Davis, once said that " Arcata is like an enlarged version of my little town back home." The townsite was first known as Tulare County seat because it had been there since 1853 when José Joaquín Mora took office as governor of Mexico and organized what is now Tulare County. In 1892 the county seat moved to Arcata because of drought conditions in Tulare County caused by a period of high rainfall in other parts of the country. The post office at Arcata opened on December 12, 1852, and was named for Captain John Fenton who also served as Postmaster General during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The first settler in what is now Arcata Township was George Wetherington who arrived with his family on February 17, 1854. Other early settlers included John Sutter, James Marshall and Hiram Wright. In 1855 Ayer Ditch (now Ayer Creek) was discovered near present day downtown Arcata; this led to increased shipping activity around the turnofthe century which helped contribute toArcatanas growth. By 1860 there were over 100 residents living in Arcata Township with businesses include: Cooper's Bakery (1860-1901), Gertrude & Augustus Herrick dry goods store (1862-1900), JF&G Lumber Company (1865-1900), Armour Hardware Store (1868-1900), Mrs Milliken’s grocery store(1871-1920) and Mr Green’s restaurant(c 1865). Arcata experienced its most significant growth after World War II when American troops stationed here began their long deployments throughout Southern California due to World War II production shortages elsewhere in America. hundreds if not thousands of people found themselves working in various factories and agricultural fields throughout the war years such as Lockheed Aircraft Corporation’s Pascagoula Plant which produced Spitfires for RAF England; United States Steel Corporation’s Soledad Plant where they manufactured tanks; Ford Motor Company’s Fremont Plant where they developed cars including Mustang models; Calumet Engine Works producing Corvettes for US Navy requirements; Haas Automotive Manufacturing Company making Buick automobiles etc.; scores more small businesses sprang up all over Southern California during those years alone just trying to keep up with wartime demand!
