The Arroyo Grande Air Force Base is a branch of the California National Guard that was activated in 1942. The base became an air force station in 1947 and served as an operational training area for fighter pilots. In 1960, the Arroyo Grande AFB became a Tactical Air Command station and was used as a training center for new USAF commanders. The wing facility at the base were dedicated to Operation Overlord, during World War II. In 1990,activation of the 9th Wing resulted in 4 squadrons being stationed at Arroyo Grande AFB with F-16 Fighting Falcons, E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft and KC-135 Stratotankers. In 2006, activation of both wings resulted in 1 squadron (Eighth) being stationed at Arroyo Grande AFB with A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft and C-130J Hercules transports. On 15 July 2007 it was announced that One Air Force Center would be opened at Arroyo Grande AFB which will house all elements associated with the 9th Wing from 8 different states under one roof allowing residents to easily access all services available from their military hometown while providing overflow housing for Joint Reserve units when needed. In November 2009 it was announced that Two Air Force Centers would be opened adjacent to each other on veteran's Row; this will allow for additional housing should either wing experience any more growth or expansion within its jurisdiction.
