The history of the Army in Arroyo Grande, California begins with the Spanish who Occupied the area in 1848. The first military unit to be stationed in Arroyo Grande was Company A, 1st Infantry Battalion under Colonel Francisco Menéndez. The battalion served as a garrison until 1851 when it moved to Yuma and then Tucson. In 1861, Company B, 1st Infantry Battalion was stationed at Camp McDowell on the east bank of the river below Arroyo Grande. On September 17th of that year Confederate General John T. Sherman attacked and captured Camp McDowell after days of fierce fighting. This event is considered one of the most important victories for the Confederacy and helped solidify American control over much of Arizona and New Mexico during this time period. In 1864, Captain George Hinkle organized a detachment from Company A 2nd Infantry Battalion to serve as part of Major-General Philip Sheridan’s brigade moving against Ulysses S Grant’s army at Fort Donelson in Tennessee. After several months’ fighting, General Sheridan withdrew his forces back to Chattanooga due to lack of food and reinforcements. On February 15th, 1865 General Samuel Bledsoe ordered an attack against Fort Donelson which resulted in a bloodless victory for the Union army over Confederate troops led by General Robert E Lee. This event is considered one ofAmerica’s greatest military successes duringthe war and helped expand United States forces into what is today Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas. After the War there were many adjustments made to how armies were structured including divisions being reorganized into brigades which eventually became regiments within infantry battalions before finally becoming regimented companies or brigades within divisions (with different mission). As Armies began disbanding throughout Southern California they often stored their weapons here along with equipment such as horses etc., giving rise to what is now known as Arroyo Grande Armory District (AGAD). They lived along the lower course of the river for centuries, until they were forced out by the Mexican government in 1848. In 1863, a company known as The Central Pacific Company built a railroad through what is now central California. This link allowed goods and people to move between San Francisco and Los Angeles more quickly than ever before, helping to spur development along the Arroyo Grande Valley. In 1915, construction began on what is today Pasadena courthouse. This building served as both a courthouse and jail until it was replaced by a much larger structure in 1919. The Building that stands today was originally designed by George Washington Carver and financed by Andrew Witherspoon. It is one of Pasadena's most iconic landmarks and has been used as a movie set, office space, and museum since its inception.
