Arroyo Grande is a small town in the Mono County of California, United States. It is located on the Arroyo Grande River, east of the larger city of Crescent City. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The first coffee bean harvest in Arroyo Grande took place in 1853 when John J. McConnell gathered beans from some trees near his cabin on the riverbank. The early coffee growers in this area were Alumni and others who had come to Arroyo Grande after growing coffee in nearby Yosemite National Park. In 1855, James Mudge began harvesting beans at his farmstead on the banks of the river. By 1870, he and his family were processing about two thousand pounds of coffee each week for some thirty-five local customers - most notably Wm. Hickey who operated a store in Crescent City at that time. In 1865, Elijah Howe began growing corn and raising pigs near present-day Junction Road and Highway 99W; he became one of the earliest farmers to grow coffee thereabouts. In 1876, Elisha Pease started picking beans from some trees along Highway 99E north of junction with US 395; by 1886 he had developed an extensive acreage for coffee production that included parts of today's Crescent City (and also Monterey County). That same year saw establishment of what is now called "the first commercial roasting plant west of Mexico" - conducted by James Fenton at his home on Avenue G in Crescent City - which processed entire acres yieldng fresh beans daily into sacks for shipment back East to San Francisco Bay Area consumers. The following year saw further development as well with establishment by John Larkin (1878) and later by Ralph Waldo Emerson (1892) both within walls/yards adjacent to their residences within town limits where they made their fortunes as dry goods merchants/packers/distributors respectively while continuing operations until 1941 when both businesses closed due to high cost involved with making espresso drinks from whole bean Coffee sourced only from those few original roasters still extant today! This article does not mention any otherragas or other coffees grown around these areas prior to its mention here...perhaps because those coffees would be too specialized or difficult to include without hurting feelings?

The town was founded in 1882 by John Wesley Powell and named after Arroyo Grande, an arm of the Colorado River that flows through southern California. The name may have been chosen to avoid confusion with nearby Arroyo Seco (also called "Rio Grande" in Spanish). The first post office was established in 1885. In 1915, Arroyo Grande entered into a cooperative agreement with Bakersfield and other small towns along the river to provide water for local farmers and consumers. That same year, Captain Ernest Hemingway visited Arroyo Grande for two weeks during his trip across America and wrote about it in his book A Farewell to Arms. In 1922, Mayor Addison Wimmer appealed to President Warren G Harding for money to build a dam on the Kern River so that irrigation could be developed hereabouts; Harding granted the request but vetoed allocating any money to actual development until further study had been made. In 1932, when World War II began less than one month later, many of the men who had worked on building Project Bernardo turned their attention towards fighting Nazi Germany; most of them never returned home again. Of those who did return home soon afterward however, only six out of 1,200 residents were still living there when hostilities ended nine years later in 1945. After World War II ended came economic prosperity as people drove away early 1950s Dust Bowl migrants looking for greener pastures elsewhere: farming became more mechanized with larger families working together on large ranches; fly-fishing became popular because dams had been built upstream making fishing easier from downstream locations such as Arroyo Grande; cattle ranching also thrived due to good feeder rivers near by providing ample water resources necessary for these operations plus some good grazing land available closer by including now part of Ranchita Lake
