The Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and support to the community in Arroyo Grande since 1903. The Coastal Guard is a military organization that provides disaster relief and maritime security services along the U.S.-Mexico border. In addition to its duties as a law enforcement agency, the Coast Guard also operates two helicopters that provide search and rescue services for people who have become lost or stranded on the coast. The first coast guard station in Arroyo Grande was built in 1903 by then-Captain George Waddell. The Coast Guard began providing Search and Rescue Services in 1951 when it was transferred from the Army National Guard. At its peak, the Coast Guard had an stationed at Arroyo Grande with a total of 16 personnel. From 1941-1945, during World War II, both Navy and Coast Guards provided search and rescue service for Naval ships operating along California's coastline. Since 1955, donations from individuals have been essential to funding the CoastalGuard’s mission of coastal security and disaster relief. Contributions range from small sums (such as $5) to large gifts (such as $100,000). Some of history’s most memorable contributions include: Captain George Waddell’s donation of a gasoline engineboat to help with coastal patrols in 1903; Commander Leland Fenton’s donation of five lifeboats to be used by members of the local fishing fleet; DONATE 2 CHICKENS FOR A GIRLFISHING PARTY IN 1985 - These were given to local fishermen in memory of Donate 2 Cows which totaled over $2,500; Commander David Healydon donated his boat “Healydon I’ ” which served as our first helicopter pad for use during disasters such as Hurricane Agnes on October 25th 1991 - this gift allowed us access into many areas not possible through foot travel; The purchase of three HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters which allowed us more capability during disasters such as 2005's category 5 El Niño storm surge flooding onshore; Commander Tom Allman donated his 150 HP diesel engineboat called Gulfstream III which was converted into an amphibious command center/command post dock capable of supporting up to 24 officers aboard; This gift became known as Station Gulfstream 1 after being moved ashore permanently at Point Conception Harbor State Park near Santa Barbara CA.; Finally, Father William Jablonski made a one million dollar donation towards coastal disaster relief in 2013 which became known as Station Casa Blanca Refuge

In the 1800s, Arroyo Grande was a place of great beauty and mystery. Over time, it has been transformed into one of the most polluted areas in California. However, there is still much to learn about this once pristine community. The area that now known as Arroyo Grande was first settled by Native Americans in the 19th century. From here, they explored what is now Southern California and established trade relationships with the Mexican missions near Tucson. The area became available for ranching after the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869.
The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish missionaries in 1821. The next year, Arroyo Grande became part of Mexico and was not explored again until 1836 when American explorer Jedediah Smith discovered the river and its appendages. In 1847, a group of Mexican soldiers led by Captain José Figueroa decided to explore the area further and founded what is now Arroyo Grande City. They named their town after General Antonio Armijo who had promised them land if they defeated the Mexicans in a battle at San Gabriel Hill. The site of present-day Arroyo Grande City was chosen because it could be easily fortified with appropriate defenses and its natural resources (elements such as watermelons) made it an ideal place for a capital. At first, only men were allowed to live there, but eventually women and children were also brought over and started living in the city with their husbands or fathers. In 1849,Arroyo Grande City was declared state capital of California following Mexican independence from Spain. On July 14th of that year, California State Constitution No .9 filled this role by authorizing Governor Manuel Micheltorena to appoint three commissioners “to investigate all claims against this Territory” which included Arroyo Grande City. Thus began what would be called California's golden period as an agricultural center due to its ample water supplies - one reason why many mansions still stand today along both banks of the river surrounded by lush gardens complete with fruit trees! There were also numerous small businesses built throughout the years including hotels, grocery stores, schools and churches – making Arroyo Grande one of the most thriving cities on either side of the continent! However, during World War II things changed dramatically as America entered into hostilities against Nazi Germany. As soon as Pearl Harbor happened on December 7th 1941 Japanese forces bombed Los Angeles County (including Arroyo Grande) resulting in great losses for local civilians including many civilian homes being destroyed or damaged; however no damage was done to any military installations within city limits! Consequently, Californian officials decided that since Los Angeles County lay outside enemy territory it wasn't necessary anymore for state capital purposes so Arroyo Grande reverted back to its original name on January 1st 1942 - just days before his death at age 86 years old!
