The towns of Arroyo Grande, California and Springdale were founded on the same day in 1853. The two communities amalgamated on October 1, 1875. On December 12, 1889, the Arroyo Grande Canyon Railway was chartered to provide a transportation service between Springdale and Arroyo Grande. In 1907, the city of Arroyo Grande annexed the towns of Springdale and Carlsbad to its boundaries. On January 1, 1912, the city of Carlsbad annexed the town of Springdale. The City Council voted to annex both towns again on July 6th 1916 because it determined that population growth in Springdale would outstrip that in Carlsbad.
