Gourmet Coffee has been a part of Arroyo Grande, California for over 80 years. The first coffeehouse in this town was opened in 1916 by American businessman and investor Arthur E. Crosby. Crosby was a pioneer in the development of roasted coffee as an art form, and his coffee shop served as the first commercial outlet for Dutch-owned Koffiehuis (The Coffee House). Crosby also founded Jardin Coffee Cooperative, which grew to become one of the leading roasters in North America. In 1977, Crosby sold his business to Brewmasters Corporation, which continued to operate Gourmet Coffee until it closed its doors in 2002. Today, Gourmet Coffee is still a popular destination for locals and tourists alike who enjoy pristinely roasted beans from their own personal roastery. The first coffee shop in Arroyo Grande, California was founded in 1906 by Dutch immigrants. The shop's namesake, Augustus Fenton, roamed the area and found small farmers and ranchers willing to sell him coffee. In 1912, Fenton opened a larger business on Main Street in Arroyo Grande. Over time, the store grew into what is now known as the Gourmet Coffee Company. In 1978, Gourmet Coffee Company merged with another local business, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Company. That company became known as Starbucks.
Arroyo Grande is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about an hour south of Fresno and two hours north of Oakland. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. The earliest known settlement in what became Arroyo Grande was by the Ohlone people on land that now includes parts of present-day Fresno and Ocotillo. The first Europeans to explore this area were the Spanish explorers Hernando de Soto and Gaspar de Portolà, who traversed the region in 1542–45 while on their way to found Mission San Diego. In 1821, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded Rancho Nacimientos y Acreados (later Rancho Seco) in what is now eastern Kern County. In 1835, he donated 640 acres (24 km²) to Emigrant George Fenton for use as a ranch homestead called "Fenton's Surveyor's Ranch" after him. This area became part of Arroyo Grande with its own post office from 1859 until 1915. The first Anglo settler in Arroyo Grande was John Cushing who arrived there around 1850 from Oregon via steamboat. He started a two-man business selling goods from his home near today's downtown Arroyo Grande before becoming well known as an agriculturalist and early settler of Kern County’s east side (now Fresno). During World War II, many Japanese Americans were incarcerated at concentration camps located within or adjacent to present-day Arroyo Grande including YOME Ichioka Internment Park; however, very few actually lived there during the war years because it was only accessible through travel visas granted by U.S. military authorities which required them to leave their homes permanently

Arroyo Grande is a small town in Stanislaus County, California. It was founded in 1851 by the Fathers of the Franciscan Mission San Francisco de Asís. The name Arroyo Grande comes from Rancho Rinconada, which was given to the town by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. The first post office in Arroyo Grande opened on December 7, 1852. In 1854, citizens voted to rename the town after General Antonio Arroyo y Costilla, who had helped lead Mexican resistance against United States forces at Buena Vista Creek during the 1850s. The community has held various names throughout its history including Asis Junction (1858-59), Asis Vineyard (1860-1912), and Spanish Villa (1920-21).
The first Europeans to visit Arroyo Grande were the Spanish in 1821, when they landed on the peninsula. The area was part of Mexico until1848, when it became a state of California. In 1858, the United States acquired the land from Mexico and made it a territory. In 1912, California won its independence from the United States and became a state.
