Arroyo Grande is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Sinaloa about twenty miles southeast of Bakersfield. The name Arroyo Grande comes from the word "arroyo" meaning stream and "grande" meaning high or large. The town was first established in 1853 as a stage stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail Trail between Bakersfield and Los Angeles. In 1876, Harry Kellar organized a small group of settlers to work on his wheat farm east of Arroyo Grande. When the railway arrived in 1903, Kellar offered to sell his land to railroad officials for $1 per acre. In 1907, he donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of his property to the community in exchange for 7% of all future sales in Arroyo Grande. Although few people lived in Arroyo Grande until after World War II when many moved into nearby Bakersfield or West Valley City because of its low cost of living and good agricultural potential, it served as an important transportation hub during that time period with several routes intersecting near by including Interstate 5 and State Route 10

After the war ended, many veteran soldiers returned home and started businesses here. In 1951, the town became part of Kern County and has remained that way ever since.
The first Europeans to visit what is now Arroyo Grande were the Franciscans in 1542. The mission was founded by Father Francisco de Aguayo and named San Luis Rey de Arroyo Grande. The ranching community that developed around the mission remained until 1848 when the U.S. acquired it from Spain. In 1853, the Mexican government purchased the Rancho Arroyo Grande from America for $10,000.
