The Marines have been deployed in many different places around the world, but Arroyo Grande is no exception. For more than a century, the Marines have been a part of California’s government and society. The Deployed Marine Corps Museum in Arroyo Grande tells the story of this tradition through artifacts and memorabilia from past deployments. The first deployment to Arroyo Grande was in 1847 as part of Colonel James P. Brooke’s battalion on assignment to protect wagon trains travelling through the area. Since then, Marines have served in various capacities throughout California, including during World War II as marines aboard USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS San Francisco (LPD-21). In 1974, Marines responded to the siege of Bakersfield by leading an assault that suppressed an uprising against Governor Ronald Reagan. Today, there are more than 4500 active duty Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County and brigade headquarters located at Camp Pendleton Annex on El Centro Peninsula. Arroyo Grande is home to two Marine battalions totaling over 650 enlisted members: The 1st Battalion Los Angeles County Marine Regiment (1LT ARNOLD) and 2nd Battalion San Bernardino County Marine Regiment (2BN LOS ANGELES CHIEFTAINED), both commanded by Lieutenant Colonels Bob Cook and Jeffery Jaffe respectively. These battalions participate in joint force operations across southern California counties such as Riverside, Imperial Valley, Kern River District Command Area command post duties with support from units from other states; including Orange County; Ventura County; Modoc/ Mono Counties; Shasta/ Tehachapi Mountains commands post duties with unit support from Unit Five Thousand One Hundredth Infantry regiment based out of Redding Army Depot outside Sacramento CA

The name Arroyo Grande may derive from two Spanish words, "arroyado" meaning “walled up or fortified” and "grande" meaning great or large. The history of Arroyo Grande dates back to 1847 when wagon trains traveled through this area on their way to Northern California. Today's community was established in 1907 by Thomas Edison and his partners as a citrus fruit packing station on the banks of the San Joaquin River. During World War II, Arroyo Grande became an important airbase for the United States Air Force because it operated out of nearbydictated targets such as Bakersfield Airport. In 2000, Arroyo Grande celebrated its centennial with a variety of events including a Parade & Festival, Homecoming Reception & Dance, Pioneer Day Celebration and an auction event honoring local pioneers who had made an impact in the community during its early years.

This bike is still used today by marines in law enforcement operations around the world! -In 1999, Lance Corporal Curtis Reeves was given a two-seater helicopter for his patriotism and dedication during Operation Iraqi Freedom! -In 2002, Sergeant First Class Michael Ahern was given a ceremonial UH-1 Huey Helicopter for his heroism during Operation Just Cause! -In 2006 Officer Second Class Joshua Lapp gave Specialist James Tisdale an American Made M240 Machine Gun Rifle as part of Army/Marine sponsored Weapons demonstration at Ft Lewis Naval Base WAUSAU HI USA
