The community was first settled by Europeans on December 6, 1846 when Captain Edward Wolk and his men founded what would become Arroyo Grande. The name Arroyo Grande comes from the Chumash word "arragaza" meaning "riverbank." In 1853, the United States Army established Fort Tejon in nearby Tulare County to protect wagon trains traveling through the Central Valley from raiders. In 1875, Lieutenant Colonel John C. Fremont organized and commanded an expedition into central Californias San Joaquin Valley to survey new routes for railroads. On October 15, 1886 local residents destroyed a U-shaped irrigation ditch that had been built by Yaqui Indians near present-day Nueva Granada Avenue and Interstate 5 south of town center to protest land grants given to them by President James K. The town site has been inhabited by people since pre-historic times. The first permanent residents were the Tongva people who lived near where modern day Arroyo Grande stands today. After Mexican independence from Spain, many native Californians decided to migrate westward and create new settlements in what would become California. In 1847, Arroyo Grande became part of Mexican territory after the California Gold Rush. In 1849, following the U.S. conquest of California, it was annexed to the U.S. and in 1850 it passed from US jurisdiction to Mexican control. The town was platted in 1865 by Ferdinand and Olivia Palmer, who named it for their rancho (land grant) on the west side of Arroyo Grande River. The first post office opened in 1867 and remained open until 1959; the last mail received was in 1966. The townsite experienced rapid growth during its early years as a result of regional trade between the United States and Mexico; lumbering, mining, farming and other businesses soon followed suit. By 1910, however, population had reached just over 1,000 with most residents working in nearby larger communities such as Rancho Cucamonga or Monterrey. After 1912 when Arroyo Grande transitioned from a rural community into an urban center due to new railroad development within its boundaries (the Central Pacific Railroad), population began to decline again but has slowly resumed growth since then; according to 2010 census estimates there are currently about 2,500 residents living withinArroyo Grande's limits
