Arroyo Grande is a small town in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Santa Monica Mountains and bordered by Chanhassen to the west, Glendale to the north and east, and Sherman Oaks to the south. The area now known as Arroyo Grande was first inhabited by Mono people in prehistoric times. A mission founded there in 1821 By Father JunÃpero Serra became one of the most important missions in California. The town began receiving settlers in 1860 when prospectors found gold near what is now Arroyo Grande. In 1863, a group of soldiers under General John Custer attacked a Native American encampment northeast of present-day Arroyo Grande; many natives were killed or captured including their leader, Chief Wintuweeqa'ahe' (Hualpaqui). In 1865, General Grant approvedqv requesting that San Bernardino County be divided into three parts for military purposes: one would be given to Forney for grazing land, another would go to Anthony Wayne for mining operations near Pasadena and finally San Bernardino would get its own county seat. The request caused some controversy because Grant's primary goal was not geographic but strategic - he wanted To move troops from Tucson Arizona so they could fight against Confederate forces occupying Mexico City - so his decision effectively split California into two parts along racial lines. The towns around today's Arroyo Grande were created during this time period; Cathedral Park was created when Rancho La Brea Avenue was extended east from Boulevard des Californios (now Ventura Boulevard) across Homestead Creek; Alice Springs cornering what is now Utopia Road between Broadway and Highland avenues was also developed during this time frame as well as present day Indian Wells which straddles both sides of Interstate 5 just east of downtown Los Angeles

By 1900, its population had swollen to over 20 thousand people and it began to experience rapid growth during the Gold Rush era. During World War II, Arroyo Grande served as an airfield for fighter planes from nearby Livermore Air Force Base.
