In 1848 Major John Sutter founded what would become Bakersfield on Rancho San Pasqual east of Arroyo Grande. By 1850 Arroyo Grande had about 100 residents and three stores - one operated by Don Laughlin - but no mills or churches. Businesses grew slowly until 1861 when Captain William Hickey arrived with an army unit seeking ranchland for troops duringthe American Civil War; he set up a tannery in what is now downtown Arroyo Grande. A few years later Hickey opened a post office near where Isabella Street meets First Street (now Main Street). In 1868 Captain Hickey sold his tannery to Nicholas Jarry for $5,000 cash plus 10 acres of land that eventually became Central Avenue (now Bear Valley Boulevard). In 1870 Sacramento entrepreneur Nicholas Jarry bought out Jarry's partners - including Captains John Tingey and Samuel Morse - forming Northern Pacific Railroad Co., which ran trains between Stockton and Sacramento until 1918. Arroyo Grande was founded in 1847 as Rancho San Francisco de Arroyo Grande by Antonio Gutierrez and his wife, María Pascual. The area around present-day Arroyo Grande became part of the Mexican state of Baja California in 1848 after Mexico won its independence from Spain. Captain José Vasconcelos, a Basque sailor who had journeyed to California in1837 and arrived at the mouth of the Río Bravo on July 25, 1838, claimed the area for Mexico. In 1849, General José Joaquín Carranza ordered Pablo García to retake Baja California from Mexico and García failed. On January 1, 1850, Carranza ordered Juan Ortiz to retake Baja California from Mexico and Ortiz succeeded on February 12. This event is known as the Battle of Arroyo Grande. In early 1860s Antonio Gutierrez started developing land north of present-day Arroyo Grande along what is now Highway 99. He named his ranch La Purísima Concepción after his Purest Conception religious belief that one could achieve paradise if he died young without sinning. The first house built there was called la Casa Blanca or White House because it was white sandstone with no mortar and lime used instead for building materials at that time. By 1865 Gutierrez had about 400 acres (1 km2) subdivided into 6 lots measuring 100 feet (30 m) x 50 feet (15 m) each; many small agricultural villages were scattered throughout this area which would be developed over time into major Hispanic cities such as Mexicali and Delano Beach today having namesakes like those: United States Postal Service ZIP code 92034
