Artesia, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 5,576 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers arrived in 1847 and named it after their patron saint, Arteaga. The name comes from the Latin "artem," meaning art or skill. The railroad arrived in 1907 and Artesia became an important center for agriculture; it was known as the "seed capital" of the San Joaquin Valley. A school district was founded there in 1913 and later merged with other districts to form Kern County Schools District #2. The local newspaper, the "Artesian", began publication in 1911 and remains active today. Today, Artesia is home to several businesses that support its residents: a library (opened in 1912), a grocery store (opened in 1959), two factories that make tires (both closed down since the 1990s), and a retirement community for people over 65 years old called Carefree Village LLC. There are also several homes located on Main Street which have been occupied by artists since before 1915 when artist Copley Prudhomme lived here with his family as part of his New York City exile during World War I.

Artesia is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. Artesia was founded in 1848 by Hilario and María de la Luz Castañeda as "Alameda". It became part of the City of Salinas in 1896. The first post office opened in Artesia on November 11, 1849. The Castañeda Adobe is a Recorded Mexican Landmark located near Artesia. It dates back to 1847 when José Francisco García and his family purchased 5 acres (2 ha) of land at what is now Main Street and Pacific Highway in Artesia from Pedro Carrillo Guerrero. They named their new home “Alameda” after their hometown of Alamo City, Texas which they had visited while living there with José Mateo Castro y Tello before moving to California in 1846. In 1850 Juan Bautista Aguilar donated 4 acres (1 ha) of land at what is now First Street and Fourth Avenue for use as an agricultural school specifically for Mexican children who had been brought over as laborers during the war with Mexico. This institution later became known as “El Colegio de las Américas” or “ Colleges of America” due to its international focus when it opened its doors on October 6, 1865 under the auspices of President Abraham Lincoln’s American Isolation Commission which aimed to promote education among free white Americans across all social classes throughout the country despite Congressional threats to close down such institutions if funding were not forthcoming from Congress. The first class graduated from El Colegio de las Américas with degrees including law, medicine, engineering and civil engineering on May 3rd 1870 just days after it opened its doors to students following passage of the Morrill Act which provided federal funds for agrarian colleges within 10 years. In 1905 Mexican immigrant Julia Alvarez Calderón donated 2 acres (10 ha) southeast of present day First Street adjacent to her rancho (farmstead) called Coyote Flat where she built a large adobe house known locally as “La Casa Blanca” or White House since it was her residence until her death in 1917; this property would eventually become part of USF&M University Campus along with many other farmlands that comprise today's downtown area including the old college buildings housing the university's main administration building and student dormitories Click here for more information about Julia Alvarez Calderón). On December 12th 1907Julia Calderón bequeathed an additional 3 acres (10 ha), situated east-northeast corner First Street/ East Highway 101 south side between Coyote Flat Road intersection & Villa Park Road intersection also known locally as Rancho San Vicente adjoining Angeles National Forest Preserve - this parcel would come under control & development by then University Properties Trust Company later renamed UC Irvine School District #1 upon acquisition by UCIrvine campus complex & subsequent annexation by UCIrvine city government - originally envisioned as site for future Memorial Stadium football stadium see photos below).
