The original Air Force Base in Artesia, California was established on December 6, 1941 as the Los Angeles County Air Training Center. The base was located on the current site of Edwards AFB and was used for training of American military pilots during World War II. The Air Force Base played an important role in the development of aviation as a means of transporting goods and troops across country. It also served as a depot for aircraft manufacturing and storage. In 1951, the Air Forces reassigned the base to become part of Tactical Air Command (TAC). Inactivated on September 1, 1991, TAC became activated again on August 16th as Aerospace Defense Command (ADC). ADC assumed responsibility for all air defense activities within California. On November 15th, 1992, ADCactivated its first combat wing with the activation of 4th Fighter Wing at Edwards AFB. The wing’s mission is to provide aerial support for ground forces in areas such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, Edwards AFB continues to serve as an important airbase responsible for providing airborne support to both ground forces and USAF Special Operations Forces operations around the world.
Artesia, California is a small town in the southerncentral United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kern County. Artesia is east of Bakersfield and west of Fresno. The artesian well which supplies water to Artesia began operations in 1881, and today still provides water for the town's residents. The well has been refurbished and now provides drinking water to all of Artesia as well as irrigating the surrounding farmland. One of the most famous landmarks in Artesia is Stonington Hall, which was built in 1903 by Judge Amos Sargent for his daughter Sarah Jane Sargent Lincoln. Today it serves as a museum and contains many pieces from both local history as well as American art from before World War II.

Artesia is a small town in Kern County, California, located about south of Bakersfield. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Artesia Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Artesia was Wm. H. Cates who arrived during 1847 from Illinois and named it after his home county of Artsbury, England. A post office called Artesia was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1901. A year later, Gold Rush Diggers discovered an SECOND gold field at Artesia; this time the men worked feverishly for weeks to recover all the ounces that had been mined thus far. On July 26, 1875, three prospectors found a THIRD gold field near today's intersection of State Route 99W and Indian Canyon Road (today's east side of SR 99W). Work on this new discovery continued through late summer and early fall as operators assayered claims and developed drill rigs; by December 20th they had recovered over $3 million worth of gold nuggets! By January 6th 1876 over 60 men were working at this new site - one-third the number employed on the original claim! On November 8th 1877 two large earthquakes struck Kern County - one magnitude 3 (the strongest ever recorded in California), while the other was more like a 2 but caused no damage or loss of life. The townsfolk quickly erected large tents to store their goods during the night before being evacuated to Stockton where they were met with gunfire from local farmers protecting their crops! The following day when news reached town that everything was safe, people returned to artesia complete with stores and equipment! In less than two months since production began there had been THREE MINIMUM GOLD RECEIPTS FROM THE DIGGING!! This demonstrates just how rapidly silver ore could be turned into cash whenInvestment became widespread statewide... In 1879 John Laughlin came to Artesia from eastern Nevada with his family as part of what would become known as "Laughlin’s Forty Thieves." Laughlin soon realized that silver veins could be found only so far down - he commenced mining operations upslope instead which has resulted in much higher mineral yields today than if he had followed downslope mining policies.. In 1903 Alice Earle donated land for a public school system within town limits; construction began that same year and finished in 1904 after five years of hard work by locals & state officials including Governor Hiram Johnson Sr., then-Mayor John Siskel & finally Henry Durant who served as Superintendent until his death in 1922.
