The depot was used to manufacture artillery and ammunition, which later helped support the war effort. In 1945, the depot was closed and its equipment sold off. The first post office in Artesia was established on July 6, 1885. The name of the town was changed to Artesia from Aguajaras on December 12, 1907. The current name comes from General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's victory at Buena Vista during the Mexican-American War and his assumption of command over Mexico City after its fall on October 20, 1821. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 3,143 people and 1,521 households residing in the town. The population density was 498 people per square mile (193/km²). There were 1,711 housing units at an average density of 222 per square mile (100/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 0% Black or African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2% of the population.

The town was named for the arts which were a major focus of the Arguelles home: painting, sculpture, architecture, and music. In 1875, Artesia became an independent city. It experienced rapid growth in the early 20th century due to its location as a staging ground for California's Gold Rush. The city's economy grew rapidly thanks to its access to transportation and natural resources such as lumber and water supplies. By the end of World War II, Artesia had become one of the most heavily populated cities in California with over 120,000 residents. The population peaked at 150,000 in the 1960s before gradually declining over the following decadesdue to suburbanization and other factors. The population fell below 1000000 by 2000
