The Army has been in the area for over 100 years. Artesia is home to Camp Roberts, one of the first Army Training and Doctrine Centers. The town also played a significant role in the development of California’s military forces. In 1847, General Antonio López de Santa Anna led an army from Mexico into California as part of the Mexican-American War. He arrived in California with 10,000 soldiers and 3 cannons. Santa Anna was met with resistance by local Native Americans who had lived there for centuries. The Californios (Californians) foughtBack and eventually forced Santa Anna to retreat back to Mexico City. Following the war, American settlers began arriving in California. One group of settlers, led by John Cranch, landed at what is now Artesia on December 12th, 1849. They named their new settlement after General Lopez de Santa Anna because he had given them permission to do so while he was still living in Mexico City. The first post office in Artesia was established on November 25th, 1850; it operated under the name “Agua Hueso” (Honey Hill). On May 6th of that year, a second post office was opened at “Mesa Blanca” ( White Mesa). On July 5th of that year, mail services were extended from Artesia to Los Angeles using wagons pulled by oxen across what is now known as Bishop Ranch Road. On October 15th of 1850, a schoolhouse was built near present-day Hearst Castle; it served as our primary educational facility until 1898 when we moved to our current building located on East University Drive). In 1854 County Judge John Sutter donated land east of Main Street for public use and construction began on what would later become Camp Roberts training ground; this area became known as Campus Martius where today we stand today! Campus Martius saw some active combat during World War II including engagements at Iwo Jima and Okinawa! It also hosted various other activities such as dances and concerts which helped bring people together during these difficult times! Today we continue our history by hosting events such as cockfights/bullfights/paddleball games etc.; all proceeds go towards support troops serving overseas!

Artesia, California is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California. The zip code for Artesia is 91723. The area now known as Artesia was originally inhabited by the Cahuilla people. They were then followed by the Ohlone people and the Tuolumne people. The area became part of Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. United States soldiers burned down the old mission in 1853 to prevent Mexican settlers from taking over the land. In 1861, American Civil War veteran John Sutter settled at what is now Artesia with his wife Mary and their children Mary Jane, John Jr., and Edward. The Suttlers ran a wagon oasis trading goods with Mexicans living along the San Joaquin River near Stockton before moving to Artesia in 1868 when they began raising cattle on their rancho de los Negros (ranch of blacks). In 1870 they built a log cabin named "Las Vegas" on what is now State Route 99 north of town. From this location they took many photos that remain iconic art pieces today including one which can be seen at Yosemite National Park's Half Dome viewpoint

The name of the town comes from Spanish "artesanía" meaning "trade." The first Europeans to visit Artesia were members of the Spanish Franciscan Mission San Francisco de Asís on September 20, 1769. They named this place after Portuguese artist Manuel da Costa who had been living in nearby Sacramento for some time and had helped lead an expedition that discovered Mount Shasta in 1776. The first post office in Artesia was established on October 3, 1847. In 1875, the California Central Railroad arrived and began carrying passengers and mail from Needles to Stockton; Artesia became a station on May 5 of that year. In 1894, while serving as sheriff of Kern County, John Sutter erected what is now known as Sutter's Fort within the limits of present-day Artesia; he named it after his father-in-law Joseph Sutter (1809-1892). It was reported by early settlers living around here that they heard about gold mining operations going on back east near Sacramento so when they learned about Sutter's Fort they started looking for it too!
