There has been coffee roasting and brewing in Artesia, California for over fifty years. The first Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf was opened in 1951 by Harry and Barbara Schultz. The Schultz family continued to roast and sell coffee until their death in 1984. They were succeeded by their son Barry Schultz who ran the business until it closed in 1990. In that time, the Business offered three different types of coffee: Colombian, Arabica, and Robusta. In 1992, Artesia's first bakery opened up on South Main Street with a small shop selling bread and pastries made from Artesian beans. Two years later, the two businesses merged to become Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Bread Company. At this time they also began serving breakfast each morning from 6am-10am as well as afternoon tea service starting at 4pm. The company currently offers six different types of coffee: Americano, decafmedium roast (Robusta), cortado (light roast), cortados (dark roast), Java dark roast (Java blend), Toraja dark roast(Toraja blend), and Sumatra black blend (Sumatra). Each cup of coffee is hand roasted using fresh Artesian beans selected for their flavor profile. All cups are packaged in reusable storage containers which can be filled with additional water or ice when needed. The Artesia Coffee Company was founded in 1916 by Harry and Mabel Pemberton. The company first roasted coffee in their home on the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Spring Street. In 1922, they moved to a larger facility on Main Street in Artesia. The company continued to grow and expand their roast program until 1977, when it merged with the nearby Santa Fe Coffee Company.
Artesia is a small town in southern California, on the banks of the Sacramento River. The population was 5,512 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Antelope Valley– Mono County borough. It is located about 45 miles (72 km) east of downtown Los Angeles and 17 miles (27 km) west of Interstate 5. The name Artesia comes from Spanish meaning "the culture." The town's first inhabitants were Native Americans who hunted game in the area. A mission called Santa Clara de Asís was founded here in 1821 by Father José Altamirano. In 1852, Artesia became an incorporated city. It grew rapidly during the Gold Rush period because many people came to work in nearby mines and mills. Today, Artesia has a strong agricultural industry with crops such as grapes, apples, almonds, watermelons, cottonseed oil, hay and vegetables. The first permanent residents of Artesia were the Missionaries of San Francisco who arrived in 1821. The town was founded on December 6, 1847 by Captain John C. Fremont and his party of soldiers during the California Gold Rush. The town was named for José Artes, a Mexican landowner who contributed $1,000 to help finance the rush. Artesia grew rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two main wagon roads and its access to water from nearby canals. By 1860, it had a population of over 100 people and was part of the Santa Clara County local government. On January 1, 1865, Artesia became an incorporated town when all other rural areas within Santa Clara County were so done same day. On November 15, 1888 it lost its status as a city when it merged with neighboring Stanford; however it remains an unincorporated community today.
