Artesia, California is a town in Kern County, California. The population was 10,971 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1872 by John Drake as Artesia Ranch. The name honors Spanish general and conqueror Francisco Pico de la Vega. The community began to grow rapidly after the completion of the Donner Summit Railroad in 1887, which connected Los Angeles with artesian wells supplying water for agriculture and industry in the San Joaquin Valley. By 1893, Artesia had a post office, two churches (St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church and Mount Carmel Methodist Episcopal Church), five businesses (a grocery store, a flour mill, a sawmill, and an insurance agency), ten homes (six of them were rentals) and twelve cattle ranches/grazing areas surrounding it. In 1912 Artesia became part of Kern County when it was created from parts of Tulare and Madera Counties; it remained one of its poorest communities until development led to increased affluence within its confines over time. With an average household income of $24 per week in 2006-2007 according to the Kern County Community Development District's report "AAPD 1996-2006" , there has been significant progress made since then as median household incomes have doubled since 2000 while poverty rates have decreased significantly; however much remains to be done especially given that residents still live near high levels of poverty without access to public services or quality education opportunities
