Artesia, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,531 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Artesia was George Hearn who arrived in 1847. He built a cabin on a knoll overlooking the Santa Susana River. A post office was established at Artesia in 1853 and remained in operation until 1907. Commercial development began with the erection of buildings by local entrepreneurs Wm. H. Ladd and Bros., builders of the original townsite around Los Angeles that included Artesia and Riverside (now Anaheim). In 1865, John Sutter settled at Artesian rancho after arriving from Northern California with his family and began raising cattle for market in nearby Bakersfield; he named his new community after himself, however locals continued to call it "Artesian". In 1868 Jens Jensen opened up a general store which soon became an important center for goods movement through Kern County during the period leading up to logging operations on nearby Mt Whitney National Park (the current downtown LA sits on land now part of that park).
