Artesia is named after Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza who traveled through the area in 1776. The order stated "no person shall be discriminated against because he desires to give pleasure ". This led to the birth of the American Greeting Card Exchange Society which traded cards between business owners . The first exchange took place on December 14th , 1865 at lunchtime at Macy’s department store in New York City . Artesia, California is located in the U.S. state of California and is a city with a population of over 100,000. The Artesia metropolitan area has a population of over 215,000 people. It was founded in 1887 by Captain George A. Smith as the town of Artesia on the east side of the American River. The name comes from Spanish words that mean "the beautiful place." The first post office was opened in 1892 and the first settlers were French Canadians who came to live near Mission San José de Artesia in 1875. In 1902, Artesia became part of Los Angeles County and then again became an independent city in 1984 when it joined Pasadena City Council. The history of Artesia goes back to its founding by Captain George A. Smith as the town of Artesia on the east side of the American River in 1887. At that time there were no roads or railroads so goods had to be transported downriver which required boats to be unloaded at different points along the way. To make this process easier, Captian George A Smith built a wharf and dock where he landed his boat for shipment his supplies from Sacramento Valley
The history of Artesia, California began with the arrival of pioneers in 1849. The town was founded by Captain George H. Smith and his wife Maria in what is now the city of San Bernardino County. In 1860, Artesia became a county seat and remained so until it was abolished in 1893. In 1853, Captain John Sutter discovered gold near Artesia and named the area "Sutter's Mill" after him. The discovery led to an influx of settlers, as well as to extensive mining operations that continued until 1862 when gold prices collapsed. By 1865, only about 25 people lived in the town; by 1870 there were only ten residents remaining. In 1892, the community was renamed Artesia after Senator Hiram Maxim (D-CA) who had been instrumental in pushing for statehood for California. The name stayed until 1903 when it was changed back to San Bernardino County because of growing population density within the new county boundaries.
