The first permanent European settlers in Artesia were José and Vicente Cedeño who arrived on July 4th 1841 from Estados Unidos de América with their families. They built a cabin on the now abandoned Rancho del Rio Grande near present day Del Norte Avenue. The area that is now Artesia was first inhabited by Native Americans: the Kumeyaay people hunted and gathered here while others fished and mined coal and uranium in nearby Kern County. In 1847 Pedro Fortunato founded La Punta Emigrant Road & Store which served as a depot for travelers coming westward over the Siskiyou Trail. In 1850 artesian water became available for irrigation after being pumped out of an underground natural well about two miles east of present day Artesia along US 92. This opened up many new opportunities for farming and ranching around this time including much of what is now Kern County. A post office was established at Artesia in 1865; it closed in 1971. A new post office called La Hacienda opened at present-day Clearwater in May 1904; it closed in 1960 due to lack of mail service to local residents despite efforts by local farmers to keep it open THROUGHOUT THE YEARS!
