Artesia, California (formerly known as Artesia, New Mexico) is a city in the U.S. state of New Mexico and the county seat of Santa Fe County. The population was 20,915 at the 2010 census.[1] It is located on the Pecos River in southeastern New Mexico. The name "Artesia" comes from an Apache word meaning "the place where all things grow".[2] The first white settlers in what is now Artesia were entrepreneur Antono Chavez and his brother-in-law José Antonio Romero, who founded the town in 1876 on land they had purchased from the Kiowa people. Romero was also instrumental inianiing Water Supply District #7 which served Artesia until 1903. On July 7, 1890, during Mexican–American War United States forces discovered gold near the edge of town; this led to an influx of miners and settlers and development of what would become Artesia. In 1912, Hispanic Miners League organizer Francisco Javier Torres set up a school for children of artesanos (artisanal miners) along with several other towns across southern New Mexico to prevent discrimination against Hispanics by local businessesowners who operated under Anglo management styles at that time. In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson established US Bureau of Mines region 5A headquartered in Albuquerque; this coincided with territorial growth within USNew Mexico consequent to Alvarado Treaty Agreement between US president Woodrow Wilson and Mexican president Porfirio Diaz that ended World War I This area became known as Western Rio Grande Valley when it was detached from NMArcanez Census Division effective February 14, 1912
