Artesia is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Artesia" comes from Spanish and means "place of flowers." The first post office in Artesia opened in 1892. In 1902, the town was named after Hector Alvarez de la Portilla y Teruela, who helped found Kern County. In 1916, Artesia incorporated as a village under the name of Villa Park and changed its name to Artesia in order to avoid confusion with nearby Pasadena. However, Pasadena had already received its own post office called Artesa (later renamed Pasadena) and village officials decided that their new community should too have an official name distinguishing it from its larger neighbor. In 1951, all of Kern County became statehood and Artesia became part of the new city of Los Angeles; however, it retains its original ZIP code 81801 which was assigned to it when Los Angeles was created through annexation of parts of Orange County on April 12, 1917. According to the 2000 census[1], there were 1,824 people living in artesian water samples taken throughout Southern California: 7% Salinity (normal range: 3-10 ppt), 85% Normal Range (ppm), 6% Chlorine levels above 100 ppb guideline level (<10 ppb average daily concentration), 75% Open Water Samples locations without any significant pollutants present (no more than two out five samples had detectable pollutants). The domestication of the lobster was first documented in 1292 when a Portuguese sailor, Dom Manuel de Almeida, noted that the lobster could be grown in an artificial pond near Lisbon. The next year, he brought back two live lobsters and put them into a pot with salt water to see if they would grow. They did, so he grew more of them and then placed them in a small oven to bake. Artesia is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas-Tahoe-Riverside (SAR) Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Artesia began with two families who operated a mercantile business on the east side of present day Artesia Boulevard. The First Family operated the business from 1868 to 1896. They were followed by the Second Family who ran it from 1896 to 1906. A post office called Artesiwas established in 1906, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1922. In 1909, a road was built through the town connecting it with Needles and other nearby communities such as Atwater and Tulare Lake. In 1916, Artesia became one of nineteen townships within Kern County when it was created from part of San Joaquin County. That year saw the opening of what would become know as "the giant sequoias", which had been standing since 1902 when they were first cut down by George Condon for his new citrus orchard near Bakersfield. During World War II, many local businesses participated in productionjobs related to military munitions production including aircraft carriers and tanks that were being built at Bakersfield Naval Shipyard on Pascagoula Bayou opposite downtown Bakersfield; these enterprises produced materials used during wartime such as Bakelite and USS New Orleans (BB-40) air raid shelters made out of metal sheeting laid across ditches near shoreline along Pascagoula Bayou; cardboard boxes filled with 134 rounds each for .50 caliber machine guns converted into revetments around Navy ships during amphibious landings off Louisiana coast - photo courtesy: US Naval History & Heritage Command via Wikimedia Commons After World War II ended, some large local companies like Boeing Corporation closed their plants while others continued operations but changed their names or moved away from Kern County altogether because of economic conditions following the war. One major example is Lockheed Martin Company which relocated its headquarters from Downey to El Segundo after years living outside of California due to high costs associated with moving goods manufacturing overseas during peacetime periods etc., although Lockheed Martin still manufactures products in Kern County today primarily through subcontractors like Raytheon Co Incorporated). On October 15, 1847, the town of Artesia was organized by a group of men led by George Goodwin. The town was named for General Manuel Micheltorena, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. Goodwin donated land to the town and laid out a street plan. He also built a small courthouse and jail. The first store in Artesia was opened by Wm. Auld on December 1, 1847. A post office was established in Artesia on January 1, 1850. John Hargrave opened his grocery store in Artesia on November 14, 1851. Artesia became an incorporated city on February 3, 1911. On July 10 of that year it merged with nearby Pacheco City to form the new city of San Bernardino County.
