Artesia, California is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino–Riverside–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The art and culture of Artesia comes from its history as an agricultural center and mining town. The first Europeans to visit Artesia were Francisco Vázquez de Coronado and Hernando de Soto in 1542. Mining began in 1849 and ended in 1877 when the last mine closed down. Artsania saw a number of businesses start up during this time including a grocery store, bakery, flour mill, photographer, barbershop and hotel. Today Artesia is home to several galleries, museums and restaurants that offer local cuisine typical of the area such as quail eggs benedict or black beans on sourdough bread. There are also two parks located within walking distance of the city limits- one with interpretive featuring Native American artefacts from nearby Owens Valley National Monument and another with a playground and basketball court for children.
