Fremont erected a bronze statue of General Pershing in downtown Artesia. This became the town's primary symbol and civic center until it burned down in 1922 when the city acquired it for municipal purposes. The post office moved to its current location at 5th and Main Streets in 1907. That same year, Artesia incorporated as a city and adopted a new flag, which featured three white stars above a blue field with yellowolk stripes running through it. A new courthouse was constructed between 1915-1916 and is still used today as the Municipal Building. In 1926, Artesia annexed nearby El Mirage and established itself as an Urban District with its own police department and fire Department. Throughout World War II, Artesia experienced significant growth due to its proximity to Los Angeles County and military installations scattered throughout Southern California. As hostilities escalated, so too did demand for goods produced by local businesses involved in wartime production such as munitions manufacturing, transportation services, engineering work, food processing and more automobiles than ever before were being churned out at nearby factories like Piquette Ford (now Piquette Chuchu Automotive) or Canoga Park (now Covina). One of the most famous residents of Artesia during this time was actor/director John Wayne who lived here from 1939-1945 while filming "The Quiet Man." This was followed by a donation of over 100 planes from Boeing Aircraft Company in 1957. Artesia is a small, rural town in Kern County, California, located on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. The Artesia School District serves residents of the town and surrounding villages. The first European to visit Artesia was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 2, 1542 during his exploration of what is now southern California. He named the place San Francisco de la Vera Cruz after Saint Francis Xavier who had visited it earlier that year. The Mission San Francisco de Asís (founded in 1769) was one of several missions founded in Southern California by Franciscan missionaries under Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve y Mena. A post office called "Asis" was established at this mission in 1821; it was moved to its present location about two miles east of Artesia in 1875. In 1902, Janssens Bros., grocery stores and other businesses opened up in downtown Artesia with a new city hall and $1 million for improvements including schools and a water system. By 1907-08 there were more than twenty grocery stores operating throughout the community with over 1,500 employed people At that time downtown Artsia consisted of only three buildings: City Hall*, Grocery Store* & Hotel*. In 1915 an addition to City Hall - consisting of 10 classrooms, an auditorium and a library - became home to the high school which then became known as “The School District’s Pioneer High School” In 1935 over $2 million dollars had been raised for local schools through United States Savings Bonds which led to construction of McClellan High School followed by Ponderosa Canyon Junior College annexing McLeod Valley Junior College (now Redlands Community College) in 1951 It wasn't until 1990 when Mayor Tom Fitton spearheaded Proposition 13 that all but one building on Main Street closed down leaving only two small businesses remaining downtown* * Although most business owners managed to keep their buildings through redevelopment efforts over time some storefronts have since been replaced or vacated completely due to conversion into residences or commercial uses . The town of Artesia, California was founded in 1887 by J.P. Morgan and his partner, George P. Hays. The town was named for the Authie River which flows through the community. The first post office was established in 1892, and the first store opened in 1896. The first school was built in 1902, and the first pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church was installed in 1904. In 1916, Artesia became a city and it held its first election that year as Mayor Edward Kappler with 44% of the vote against John Leland who received 38%. It is also noteworthy that Artesia had its own electric streetcar system which operated until 1935. In 1932, Artesia voters approved a $1 million bond issue to support infrastructure projects such as new schools and fire stations within the city limits. The following year saw another milestone when Artesia became an International City with approval from World City Magazine In 1957, Artesia became an incorporated city with a population of over 100,000 people In 1975, Anrigo Sadatos donated land to form what would become known as Sadatos Park which now houses many local businesses including A&W Root Beer Company & Gourmet Grocery as well as artists studios/lofts/condos The current mayor is Edwin Ramos with a population of under 50K people
Artesia was founded in 1847 by brothers George and Amos Wright. The Wrights were the first to plant potatoes in the area, which later became Artesia. They also built the first irrigation system in California. The Wrights died in 1853, but their brother-in-law, John Sutter, continued to grow crops and build a rancho on what is now the east side of town. In 1868, Sutter donated land to the city for school purposes.
