In 1924, the regiment moved to Artesia and became part of the 2nd Cavalry Division. The 95th Infantry Regiment continued to serve in California until 1951, when it was disbanded and its members were absorbed into other units within the National Guard. However, the traditions of this unit have continued through time and today there are still active units within the National Guard in Central California that celebrate United States Military culture and history.

The Artesia National Guard was organized on December 12, 1916 as the California Army National Guard. It was activated on November 15, 1917 and its first commander was Maj. Gen. James Fenton. The unit served in World War I and II before being honorably discharged in 1946. In 1947, it was re-designated as the Artesia County Sheriff's Department (ACSD) and then the Artesia Police Department in 1973. On February 13, 1984, it merged with the Kern County Sheriff's Department to form the Kern County Sheriffs' Office.

Artesia is located in Kern County, California on the Bakersfield-Salinas River Valley. The city was founded by Captain John C. By 1852, Artesia had become an important agricultural center with its own flour mill, cheese factory, and meatpacking plant. In 1916, Artesia was designated as the seat of Kern County by then-Governor Hiram Johnson. During World War II, Artesia became one of the most important manufacturing centers in southern California due to its production of munitions and aircraft parts. The city's largest employer until recently was its now defunct water distribution company which provided drinking water to many homes and businesses in downtown Artesia. In recent years, Artesia has seen a resurgence in cultural activity with several popular local bands playing at local venues throughout the year.
The first Europeans to visit Artesia were Spanish explorers in 1769. They named the town after the river that flows through it, the Artesia. The area was part of Mexican territory until 1821 when it became part of California. The mission at San Francisco de Asís (founded in 1797) was the first European mission in California. Missionaries arrived here in search of a new route to California and brought with them plants and animals that would later be used for food. In 1836, American gold seekers discovered gold near by and began mining techniques here which soon led to wealth being brought in by miners and entrepreneurs. In 1849, an ordinance was passed allowing land grants to be given out as Ranchos Sacramento del Oro (Rancho Sacramento). This opened up much of what is now Northern California to ranching and farming.
