Artesia, California is a city located in Kern County, California. The population was 69,609 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and home to the University of California at Artesia. The first people to live here were the Ohlone Indians who hunted game in what is now central Artesia. European explorers and soldiers passed through this area on their way to missions in 1849 and 1852. In 1863, General Don Juan Bautista Vasquez founded Rancho Rio Seco west of present-day Artesia on land grant from Mexico. The Vasquez family continued to own and operate ranchos in this area until 1935 when they sold all their holdings to local citizens for $2 million. Rancho Paso del Norte was established about two miles east of present day Artesia by Manuel Nieto about 1875 as a cattle drive route between Bakersfield and San Bernardino Valley. A post office called Paso del Norte was established there in 1889, but it did not remain open long because postal service bypassed this area during those days. The first person born in Artesia was Harry Snively on October 15, 1888; he died at age one year old while living with his parents near what is now downtown Artesia after being hit by a car while crossing the street with a friend on November 5, 1888. His death marked the beginning of what would be an annual tradition that celebrates Harry Snively Day throughout Kern County each fall: On November 5th anyone born within 30 miles of Fresno or Delano (where Harry's father had lived before moving to Fresno) may receive a free wagonload of groceries from the grocery store across town at First National Bank & Trust Company on Main Street between Broadway and Elmhurst Avenue known as "Harry's Grocery." In 1907 City Councilwoman Florence Hirschhorn Recreation Center opened up shop inside what is now Central Library which then served as both schoolhouse and gymnasium for residents of residential areas north/northwest of main square including today's Downtown Arts District (then bounded by 3rd Street NW., Eighth Avenue NW., Clay Street NE., Sacramento Streets NE., current US 101W). It should be noted that Central Library wasn't built until 1912-13! One significant event that occurred during early 1907 when City Councilwoman Hirschhorn organized programs outdoors around library facilities included planting roses along Third Street NW.; lateratherine Cutshall Ross donated 4 acres adjacent SW corner 3rd & Clay StreetsNW for parkette adjacent Presidio Hotel lot - also part of original Town Square lots acquired by City CouncilWWVH Thereafter many events took place outdoors including beautiful flower displays etc often attracting large crowds which sometimes caused inconvenience due parked cars blocking streets

Artesia is a small, agricultural town in Kern County, California, United States. It was founded in 1881 by Captain John Sutter and his band of miners. The first post office opened in 1886. Artesia is located on the Kern River north of Bakersfield. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. The town sprang up due to the discovery of gold in 1848. By 1860 there were over 100 people living in Artesia and it had a school and some stores. However, mining ceased by 1865 because of depletion of resources and competition from more prosperous towns across Kern County. In 1881 Captain John Sutter established himself as a rancher and miner with his wife Eliza Jane Sutter near present-day Mount Shasta National Monument (part of today's Redding). They named their new community "Artesia" after the nearby artesian wellhead at which they found gold worth prospecting for gems along the riverbank. The initial development around Artesia included several scattered pioneer homes built on hills overlooking the Kern River valley floor before 1840s when water tables were too low to allow farming or other settlement activities; these dwellings are generally considered historical landmarks within their respective communities today.
