Arvin, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. Arvin was founded in 1905 by prospectors and miners who discovered gold in the area. It became an agricultural center during World War II due to its proximity to the military installations around Bakersfield and Lancaster. In the 1960s it became a bedroom community for nearby Bakersfield; however, recent growth has brought more businesses and residents to Arvin. The first people to live here were prospectors who struck gold near Arvin on October 25, 1881. They named their new settlement after George Armstrong Custer's last battle of the American Civil War regiment known as Third Kansas Infantry under General Phil Sheridan (1846-1900). The first post office at Arvin was established on March 25, 1906. The name of the town was changed from Rock Springs on November 3rd, 1907 to Arvin because of objections from surrounding communities that they had been given identical names without giving proper credit to their predecessors. In World War II many local farmers raised food for both world wars through contract farming with other countries such as Japan and China. After the war many farms were abandoned and most of what remained were used for grazing animals or housing development which destroyed much of what prewar agriculture had left behind including some very old farm buildings dating back over 100 years! A few remaining buildings still stand today including: Old Post Office Building #2 (now occupied by IHOP), former Grain Elevator #1 (now home of a gas station), two Mrs Kapp Houses (one now used as storage units for several businesses) and one large frame machine shed originally built by J & H Phelps Co.; all three structures are significant examples of early 20th century agricultural architecture in Kern County! Arvin experienced rapid growth after World War II when locals found new opportunities in nuclear energy due to discoveries made at Loma Prieta National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory along with other growing industrial centers like Bakersfield and Lancaster across California. Many new businesses came online thanks to flood control projects done during this time such as: San Joaquin River Watershed District's Fish Hatchery Program which allowed farmers access to fresh water supplies needed for raising fish; State Water Resources Control Board's John Sutter Project which improved irrigation systems throughout Valley counties; also notable is 1969’s Beaumont Dam construction which increased water availability from adjacent rivers making agriculture possible once again! In 1847, George Arvin and his brother John formed the Arvin brothers Railroad in what is now Inland Empire County. The railroad was originally built to provide transportation for gold miners and other prospectors during the Gold Rush era. The Arvin brothers continued to operate their railroad until 1870, when it merged with the Pacific Railway. In 1881, the Arvin brothers became owners of the San Bernardino Valley Railroad which ran from San Bernardino to Riverside. This company was merged into Southern California & Western Railway in 1914. In 1919, the Arvin brothers sold their interest in Southern California & Western Railway to Budd Company. The company then became known as Budd Railways Corporation. In 1936, BuddRailways Corporation was renamed American National Railroads (ANR).
