Arvin is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Arvin comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "haunted place" or "cursed spot." The first settler in what is now Arvin was James Hinton, who arrived in 1851. He named his land after his friend and neighbor, General George Armstrong Custer. In 1896, William Sinkfield purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of what is now Arvin from Colonel John Leland for $4,000. Sinkfield had wanted to create a community where he could raise cotton and other crops on its rolling acres that would provide him with income throughout the year. He began building houses soon after purchase and completed them by 1899; they are still standing today on Main Street east of the present courthouse complex. Sinkfield also planted many trees on his property including chestnut and oak trees which continue to grow today as well as maples and redwoods which became famous in California during the 1930s when they were used for pulpwood production near Fresno
