Arvin is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Tahoe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Arvin comes from the Yokuts word "arwin," meaning "the end." The first Europeans to visit what is now Arvin were Spanish missionaries in 1769. A year later, an American party led by Captain James Cook discovered the area and named it after Mount Whitney (then called Cerro Gordo) in present-day Arizona. In 1847, prospectors found gold near Arvin and began mining for it. By 1860, only a few hundred people lived in the community. In 1892, a sawmill was built on the riverbank around which Arvin developed as a small town with several stores and taverns. By 1914 there were six churches and over fifty residents living in one or more homes. The mill closed down in 1964 but millhands continued to live there until they left for other localities during the 1970s and 1980s when farming became more prevalent in the area During World War II many Japanese Americans who had been interned at relocation camps located nearby were forced to work at local mills until they could be processed into military service

Arvin is an unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. The post office at Arvin was established in 1899 and has been operated by the same family since then. The population was 2 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what became Arvin was George Atherton, who arrived on a horse with his wife and four children in 1859. After years of travel, they found a fertile valley to farm and named their new land Arvin after their home town of Melbourne, Australia. Atherton's son-in-law Tom Atkins took over the farmstead in 1861 and started operating a sawmill that produced lumber for local buildings and boats. In 1865, Atkins married Lillie Lyon, daughter of John Lyon, owner of the nearby San Bernardino cotton gin. Over time other families joined them on the property including James Fenton in 1868 who built a store and hotel; John Haines opened a bakery; Augustus Reilly added another hotel (the Reilly Hotel now known as the Rathburn House); Chauncy Allaire purchased some acreage around 1905; Wm. Hynes moved into his later house about 1907; Willard Gibbs bought land east of town about 1912; mail service began from Arvin through Banning station on May 10, 1913;
